What DIDN'T get nominated for an Oscar?
that deserved it?

I thought "Thank You for Smoking" should've gotten nominated in adapted screenplay.

And of course, I was surprised Dreamgirls didn't get a Best Picture nomination.

3. I was surprised at that
I really liked it a lot, but never expected it to get a Best Picture nom. I'm glad Alan Arkin did, though.

6. I'm a movie buff
I go to the movies almost every week - I agree with you - LMS was good, entertaining, but really it's been overrated. Much like that movie about wine a while back - what was the name of that one? Same thing.

yeah, same thing

sometimes i think it's a matter of bandwagon effect, regardless of the actual work

both were good films, but not necessarily laurel-worthy

14. I think the Academy
likes to recognize at least one "small" film.

LMS was a very very good movie, and I'm glad it got picked, just because small movies like that should get some attention. It has no chance of winning, but I think it's nice. And I'm tickled that the little girl got nominated. She was great.

20. hey!
Alan Arkin sure carried his weight in that.

As did the teenaged boy. There were a lot of great performances in that.

I think that's why they recognized it - it's not a GREAT film, but it's a PERFECT film. All the performances were excellent, the screenplay was excellent, the story was fun.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's a little gem of a movie. As I said, not great, but perfect.

And "Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector" didn't win the special award for worst piece of shit released this year.

9. I'm glad Wahlberg
got nominated - he was fantastic, I thought.

I thought all the performances were great in that - surprising that only Wahlberg got a nomination. I thought for sure Nicholson would.

But it doesn't matter - Eddie Murphy's winning that award.

But then again, were there any other musicals?

that's the big shocker.

Can't think of any other real musicals, but then that's not too surprising. We're lucky to get one decent musical a year.

19. The Academy only recognizes "Best Picture" -- not like the Golden Globes, which
has both "Best Picture--Drama" and "Best Picture--Musical OR Comedy." So they essentially have two categories, plus the category of "Best Picture--Foreign Language." Just more opportunities for awards from the Hollywood Foreign Journalists.

21. I'm going out on a limb, but I think "The Departed" is a shoe-in.
Martin Scorsese scored an ALMOST hit with that one -- although the movie had its flaws. I think he'll be recognized this year, and, as always, for his body of work over the years.

But I've been quite wrong before. Stay tuned.

22. I agree
he'll win for Director. Not sure about Best Film, though. I haven't seen Babel or Letters from Iwo Jima yet.

Can't muster up the interest to see Babel. I hated "21 Grams" by the same director.

I also thought "The Queen" was a near-perfect little movie, but I doubt it'll win.

30. Of the two, I rate "Letters From Iwo Jima" an "A". I gave "Babel" a "C minus".
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 10:43 PM by Radio_Lady
"Babel" was beautiful filmed and acted, but one reviewer captured my idea.

"It was about good people making VERY BAD CHOICES." Very forced and odd timelines and plot holes.

One good thing: This film was shot in Morocco, where we have always wanted to go -- Rock of Gibralter and Morocco were on a long list from decades ago.

Based on what I saw, I've decided not to go to Morocco. It looks too much like eastern Oregon -- and parts of Arizona. Desert and scrubby greens. Not my kind of place.

How come "The Fountain" didn't any nominations for F/X?? Holy christ! It was visually amazing!! But look out and give Click a fucking nom! FUCKING CLICK!

"Children of Men" didn't get a best pic? WTF! That movie haunts me even after 2 viewings. This was some serious old fashion highway robbery.

Will Smith for best actor?? That whole movie was a long drawn out POS. His role wasn't oscar worthy.

Can we ever go a year with out The Dane getting a nod. Though I was very happy seeing Mirren get one. Got she was HOT in Excalibur! sorry, childhood thing still sticking around.

I hate this separating foreign films from 'regular' films. Pan's Labyrinth would stomp them a new mud hole if it was allowed to compete. Del Torro along with Curron are probably among the best around.

Disappointed United 93 wasn't give more. An inspiring film I felt gave me some peace about that terrible day. Greengrass is awesome.

This whole list is like a mixed bag. Someone above said they like to recognize at least one small film. I say bullshit. Recognize it ONLY if it deserves it, not just for the sake of doing it. Because of this two great films were snubbed. I really think the academy really let down some of the late releases this year. We all know they like to hold back the good ones till the end of the year to keep them fresh in the mind, but they really screwed "Children of Men" and "Pan's Labyrinth." So ya, I think I'm about done with them.

If you haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth, check out a great film the director did earlier. "The Devil's Backbone." Yes, it's also in subtitles, but I feel if a 'foreign' film is that good you'll forget that it's subtitled halfway through it.

ON EDIT:
So I'll be rooting for The Departed, because it was very good. Whalberg kicked ass even though I felt DiCaprio deserved his nom for this flick not Blood Diamond. I really liked Departed because it's Scorsese, it's good, and it hit's close to home.

38. Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore, which no one expected,
but really mattered to me since I was one of the people who made the film. We at least made the short list of 15 documentaries being considered for the nomination, but alas, no Oscar trip for me.

Overall, I can't fault the choices for Best Documentary Feature. All of the films nominated are very good.

42. #1: Clint Mansell's Score for "The Fountain"
also, Children of Men for best pic and Volver for best foreign pic. The foreign category seems to be the most consistent source of farcical nominations/snubs every year. Days of Glory and Water over Volver? Water was decent, but give me a fucking break.
