It is 1 degree above zero, here. I just took them out to go potty. I had to carry both of them in. They literally could not move. We were out for probably a minute tops.

1. That cold.
Poor puppies.

Ya'll try to stay warm.

If it got that cold down here, we wouldn't make it.

4. We'll get well below zero tonight
No clouds mean radiational cooling. It's fucking cold. I can't help but think about the homeless, and animals that are kept outside when the temps get this low.

6. It got into the 30's and below here,
My animals wanted nothing to do with it.

I keep out extra food for animlas that come to eat here.

I have some boxes in the back yard with hay, they are slept in everynight.

2. Ya it's +8 here in Michigan.
My cat's usually try to sneak out the door when I go in or out. Not today or for the past week.

5. Smart cat.
My cats do the same thing, but it doesn't get that cold here.

We having a winter here, so my cats are using the kitty boxes now.

7. My cat is very antsy
She wants to go out....cries at the door. When I open it she gets one whiff of the frigid air and back in she comes. She's acting very frisky, and wanting to play. Cabin fever has overtaken all the creatures here.

10. WOW - I wonder if that's our forecast, too.
I think that -20 and below wind chills are the criteria for school cancellations here.

I'll have to look at our forecast.

8. lemme tell ya about COLD
I used to live in Winnipeg (Winterpeg) Manitoba. Cold is a different DIMENSION there.

-50 degrees Celsius makes EVERYTHING weird. Even your breath freezes and drops to the ground immediately. Your tires when you drive make a "thump-thump-thump" sound from being turned to a rigid, solid object. If you spit, it bounces off the pavement as chunks of ice.

And you get frostbite just brushing your hand on a bare metal object. It feels like a bee sting.

And you go NOWHERE without finding a place to plug in your block heater.

11. I'd like to experience that once. Then quickly leave
I'll bet jet aircraft looks spectacular taking off, assuming the damn things run at all.

12. Do ya'll ever get used to that level of cold.
We have the opposite problem with heat in the summer.

I can go out in the heat but damn the AC feels good.

17. Yes, we do
Those are the extremes. But simple precautions make it bearable. Layering clothes, well-sealed windows and remembering NEVER to take a pee outside.

22. I like the cold.
It is 45 here and I have a window open.

Our homes are not built for your winters.

I have replaced most of the old windows in the house but that is more for the AC in the summer.

The dressing in layers really works.

We are having a winter here for us, and that is nice.

Summer is just around the corner.

15. That beats our extremes --Burrrrrrrrr
I will be looking for those strange sun devils tomorrow if it's still clear. They are really quite beautiful. Strange things happen with light when it gets this cold. I can see a street light down the road, and it is refracting light up into the sky.

20. "Sun Dogs" as we call them
Two bright spots on either side of the sun - with rainbows. And Ice Fog - one of the strangest things I've seen. Frozen mist that just hangs in the air, like motionless smoke.

Ah, the memories.

23. Yeah, I've seen it here.
Early in the morning when temps are sub zero the fog makes the most beautiful ice crystals form on the trees and bushes.

When you inhale that still cold air it hurts your lungs.

18. I just finished Silence of the North by Olive Fredrickson.
Canada sounds like a harsh but unbelievable beautiful land. I wish I had the resources to go see it.

16. My Siberian Husky who has been spending most of his time
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 11:12 PM by LibertyLover
recently outside on our deck said no thanks when offered the opportunity to stay out this evening. As for the greyhounds and whippets, let's just say that they were lumps under blankets on the futons in the family room. When a husky won't stay out, it's cold.

21. Years ago we had a big mixed breed Burmese Mountain dog
and black lab. He loved the cold! He would stretch out on a blanket of snow, happy as a pig in shit.

19. I hear ya!
It's in the sixties here in the Keys and the wind is tossing the boat around pretty hard. I turned the A/C Coleman over to the heat strip earlier today and put on the flannel jammies. Should be back in the seventies tomorrow, but for now I have cold toes.

But we persevere...
