Tailgating Forbidden For Super Bowl

CBS4) MIAMI Die-hard football fans attending the Super Bowl game at Dolphin Stadium are getting a rude awakening after finding out that no tailgating of any type will be allowed on game day within one mile of the stadium.

"There is no tailgating allowed in the Dolphin Stadium parking lots," Sue Jaquez, a member of the Super Bowl XLI Host Committee, confirmed on Tuesday. "And there is no tailgating anywhere within a one-mile radius of the stadium." "And there are no RVs allowed."

Tailgating is permitted during regular- and post-season games for Dolphins fans, a team official on Tuesday said it would indeed be allowed at the Super Bowl. According to Jaquez, however, the official has been seriously misinformed.

The Dolphins do not organize and oversee the Super Bowl, Jaquez pointed out. Instead, those duties are left up to NFL officials. And because of security reasons, no pre-game partying on (or very near) the premises will take place. Fans spotted tailgating could face charges, Jaquez said

tailgating outside of the stadium grounds, it would be interesting to see how the local police choose to enforce this, or whether they even will. If I lived in Miami, I'd be sorely tempted to do a little tailgating within the one mile limit. Since when does the NFL rules trump local law?

Or public consumption of alchohol - possibly food distribution or helath/safety violations.

When it comes right down to it, they can find just about any excuse they want or just make something up and take them in then release them after the game with no charges filed.

Its amazing how little things like this make me feel safer.

The NFL Cops gonna be patrolling that one-mile radius? Or does the NFL tell local police what to do?

I'd rent a big helicopter, and tailgate party right above the parking lot, just over one mile above it, and then parachute down before the game started.

Then again, I suppose if I had that much money I'd have already secured some box seats, and it wouldn't be an issue

These buzzkills were doubtless relieved at the outcome of the NFC game. A loss by the Godless Killing Machines would have led to a tailgate unstoppable by any mere ordinance, or any other work of man, for that matter... (sigh)

People who win "go to the Super Bowl!" contests go to the Super Bowl. Corporate executives go to the Super Bowl. Celebrities go to the Super Bowl. Die-hard football fans can't afford to go to the game.

Listen close, kids: The National Football League is responsible for ticketing the Super Bowl. According to the Miami Herald, this year's Super Bowl tickets cost either $600 or $700 depending on where the seat is in the stadium. (Seats on the sides of the field are $700.) Every team gets some, every player on those teams gets some, NFL sponsors get some, and on and on. Many of those seats will wind up on stubhub.com, which resells them for $3000 each or more. The NFL will issue the tickets for the 2008 Super Bowl in January 2007. There's a lottery held in which the NFL allows a certain number of seats to be sold to fans at face value, but the odds of winning the Powerball are about as high.

So let's assume you decided to go to the Super Bowl. You didn't get drawn in the lottery, the Fortune 50 corporation you own isn't a marketing partner of the NFL, and the only football players you know gave their tickets to underprivileged children. You decide to make a day of it, so you call your best friend, your oldest son, and your lawyer and inform them all of you are taking your wives to the Super Bowl. Eight tickets for the Super Bowl at the going rate are about $24,000. Anyone who's got twenty-four thousand dollars to spend on one day's entertainment does NOT want to see people who can't afford to spend $3000 for a ticket to a football game--a typically-lame football game at that--cooking hamburgers in the parking lot.
