Poll question: Which is your favorite Britcom
Edited on Mon Jan-05-04 06:15 PM by scottcsmith
Britcom as carried by PBS. I know the list is huge but I'm going off of the top of my head here, knowing that different PBS stations carry different shows.

BTW, my favorite is "As Time Goes By."

2. Some tough competition, but it has to be "Fawlty Towers"
The casting was brilliant, a great combination of clever, physical humor...

"Fawlty Towers" was the best Britcom ever.

... of "The Vicar of Dibley," but it had me howling (and that at 3:30 am, in hotel room in Dallas, when I had to be up for a meeting at 6:00).

Still, I give good marks for "Mr. Bean," "To the Manor Born," "Black Adder" and many others.

On edit, I dearly wish there would be a revival of "Doctor in the House," which appeared in the late `60s and early `70s. Without question, some of the funniest stuff I've seen on television since Ernie Kovacs.

I also have a soft spot for "The Vicar of Dibley".

If it's sci-fi comedy, oddball situation comedy, spoof comedy, sex comedy, always turn to the Brits first! After all, they were the ones who created the formats that were copied to become "All in the Family" and "Three's Company".

I will say "Just forget about the US version of Coupling, nobody involved cares or wasn't a good actor in the first place."

43. I forgot the title, no one ever knows which show I'm talking about, and...
...it's better than all of the above! It aired in the early '80s here in the U.S. and was about a right-winger, a retired British Army (I think) Major, who formed his own little militia to overthrow the British government for being too soft and liberal. Does anyone else besides me remember this one???

Oh, and Dawn French fans -- she's in the Harry Potter movie that's coming up in 5 months. She'll be playing The Fat Lady in the picture.

50. You're thinking of "Fairly Secret Army"
"One of the many highlights of The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin was the episode in which Jimmy displayed to Reggie his secret cache of rifles, put aside 'in case the balloon goes up'. In Fairly Secret Army that inflatable object - Harry believes - is about to ascend. He supposes there's a battle to be fought, to 'rekindle the spirit of the British Lion' by forming a group dedicated to fighting the 'wet-leftie-feminist-loonies' taking over the country. He and his fraudulent and dangerous right-wing cronies set out to rescue the country from itself."

Can't believe no one's mentioned this yet. This show put Hogan's Heroes to shame. My favorite characters were Leclerc and especially Crabtree, the British spy who posed as the French police officer and always got his words mixed up ("Good Moaning" instead of Good Morning).

I haven't seen any episodes in a few years because the local PBS station stopped showing it. I just found out, though, that the first series will be coming out on DVD in the U.S. this month. I definitely plan on ordering it.

53. What about "Only Fools And Horses"?
For those of you who don't about that show. It was on in the early 80's. It was about this shady salesman named Del Boy Trotter who lives with his younger brother named Rodney who is trying to make his own way in the world but gets dragged into Del Boy's shananigans. Their Grandad lived with him until he died during the duration of the show which brings in their Uncle Albert. It was a hilarious show! The PBS station in Tacoma, WA showed it for a while. Anybody else seen this show?

Here's more info on the show!

55. BBC is about to do a vote in the UK on this
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sitcom/top100.shtml

there was voting on a list of 100; this Saturday they reveal the order so far, and start the voting on the top 10 (these 'top 100' or 'top 10' shows are taking over British TV).

Not mentioned here so far (maybe it was never showed in the USA) is Porridge - very good acting by several people in it, and good writing (Clement and le Frenais - they now mainly write in the USA, for Tracy Ullman and others, often anonymously 'rescuing' shows that get into difficulty, apparently).

57. New episodes of Ab Fab are being shown on Oxygen
Don't know when they were done, but they're definitely new to the US. It's one of my faves but I voted for "Blackadder". Other favorites: "The Young Ones", "Red Dwarf", "Father Ted" & "Chef".

"Monty Python" & "Fawlty Towers" are forever enshrined in the Hall of Fame--let some of the newer ones compete. Of course, the "newer" ones over here may be very old over there. "Are You Being Served" is definitely one of the old ones & most of the jokes were ancient when the show was new. But it still cracks me up.

"The Office" is excellent but a bit depressing--too close to reality.

62. Black Adder, and "Mind your Language" from the (?) 70's
It was wonderfully un-PC, about a bunch of immigrants who were taking night-time English lessons.
Dealt in pretty much every stereotype you could think of: the stern, no-nonsense headmistress, the sexy but clueless French woman, the silent Asian woman knitting in the back, the Indian and Pakistani men going at each other...

Anyone else remember it?

79. I know Father Ted was produced and filmed in England but....
isn't it more Irish than British?

John

67. Black Adder al the way!
The funniest, most outrageous show I've ever seen. Take Faulty Towers and multiply it by about 4.

71. I like many ... from 'To the Manor Born' to 'My Hero' ...
Edited on Tue Jan-06-04 01:25 PM by cosmicdot
the Bucket woman always makes me laugh, as do Mrs. Slocomb and Mr. "Menswear" Humphries are you free ...

'AbFab' is brilliant ... and, I love 'the Vicar of Dibley'

but, I voted for 'Blackadder' because of its setting in different historical periods, and Rowan Atkinson and his side-kick, Baldrich, are so funny

72. I loved "To the Manor Born" and also that one that had the neighbors
who were uppercrust brittwits/back to nature types (Jerry and someone/Tom and Barbara)
Python and Fawlty Towers excellent as well, of course...

75. Audrey fforbes-Hamilton (Penelope Keith) was my main intro to Britcom
Edited on Tue Jan-06-04 01:30 PM by cosmicdot
sitcoms ... unlike Benny Hill or Python ...

having visited England in the 80s was a perfect introduction for appreciating it all the more ...

now, if BBC America could just bring us up-to-date so we can be watching the current lot being watched in the UK ... now, that would be nice

I often look at the year of production to see where we are.
