I got a gripe about the TSA...

This weekend, I traveled for the first time under the new "3 oz bottle" rules, which are:

1. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.

2. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.

You wanna know what’s so ridiculous about rule #1? I can take FIFTEEN ounces of the same liquid if I want, as long as it’s in five separate 3 oz bottles.

Problem is, most bottles of stuff are at least FOUR ounces--which get tossed by TSA security. And the empty travel-size bottles you can fill with your shampoo or whatever are also 4 oz bottles (at least the ones at Target are).

They should just say "all liquids or gels in containers have to fit in a quart-size bag". The rule that each liquid has to be in a 3 oz bottle accomplishes *nothing*. I can still take 6 oz of something, so whether it’s in 1 bottle or 2 makes no difference. What difference does it make if I take three 2.7 oz tubes of toothpaste, or one 8 oz tube? It's the same amount of stuff!

Sheesh.

I thought it was gallon bags. I am going on a trip in June....I am trying to figure out HOW I am going to get several packages of sunscreen, shampoo, cream rinse, toothpaste, enough for 4 people for a week, into those little bags.

The 3 ounce rule is only for carry-ons.

Then only carry on what you need for the trip. Five three-ounce bottles of schnapps should help the ride.

Air pressure changes in the cargo hold (and onboard the plane, for that matter) can make quite a mess of those bottles of suntan lotion--esp. if the tops aren't on tight.

besides, why would you want to carry that much liquid with you ?

I just sent everything I had through baggage. It takes a little longer to have to wait at baggage claim but it saves a lot of time going through security.

There always seems to be some numb nuts trying to bring through everything they are not supposed to.

It's the silly 3 oz bottle rule. It accomplishes NOTHING. If TSA wants to limit the amount of liquids I carry on, the quart bag does it right there.

Whether I put 15 ounces in:
Fifteen 1 oz bottles
Five 3 oz bottles
Three 5 oz bottles
One 15 oz bottle

IT'S STILL FIFTEEN OUNCES!

The fear is induced even further when they limit the bottle sizes and make up dumb ass rules.

An otherwise intelligent engineer I work with told me how terrible it would be if the terrorists in London where allowed to bring that stuff on board the planes. He said the planes would have been blown up in mid-air otherwise and would have been far worse than 9/11. So many people believe this crap.

I had two pint-size bottles of water in my carry-on. I knew they were illegal, just forgot they were in there. Five minutes from the scanner, I started chugging. I drank both bottles before getting through the line, and put the bottles in my carry-on. No problem. Empties are ok. So once inside the secure area, I just re-filled them at a drinking fountain, then got on the plane. I like having water to drink when I'm flying.

All I carried on-flight in my quart-size Ziploc bag was lotion and eyeglass cleaner.

It's the stupid 3 oz bottle rule. As in, it's okay if I carry:

12 oz of shampoo in four 3 oz bottles,

but not

12 oz of shampoo in three 4 oz bottles,

and not

12 oz of shampoo in two 6 oz bottles.


And since so many items come in 4 oz bottles, it's a pain.

Just limit me to the 1 quart bag, but don't tell me what size bottle it has to be in, since it makes NO sense at all.

Supposedly, the reason for this dumbass rule is that it makes it harder for the Terr'ists to assemble a bomb on the airplane by combining certain liquids.

So when the TSA screeners confiscate your liquids that you shouldn't have or that you have too much of, they throw all that stuff in a single big trash container, where, presumably, all those dangerous chemicals could combine and blow up, right there at the airport...
