Any suggestions for books to read?
I like fiction but can't find anything worth reading anymore. I'm looking for new writers. Tired of the same old stuff.

2. Which writers have you liked?
Which genres, etc.?

The best novels I read last year (actually the only ones) were by Alberto Moravia--Contempt and The Conformist.

7. I'm looking for new directions in reading.
My ideas are getting old. I need a new direction. Anything that gives me ideas to get even with the Bush Administration.

4. If it's fiction you want
My recomendations are all going to be Science Fiction since that's almostmost exclusively the Fiction genre I read in terms of new stuff.

Ken MacLeod is a recent personal discovery of mine. His "Learning the World" is fantastic, intelligent, funny and fun. Newton's Wake and his Engines of Light series are also excellent. "Newton's Wake" is a bit more space opera but done intelligently. The "Engines of Light" gets you a little more poltical and social commentary, very interesting.

9. I'm hooked on David Mitchell as of late
He's a young-ish British author. Give "Cloud Atlas" a whirl. It's very, very good.

10. Just finished reading another of Christopher Moore's books.
Grab any of his books. Laugh out loud funny. Twisted sense of humor.

11. Norman Mailer just wrote a new book:

I'm excited about that one, but haven't read it yet.

I'm generally into the heavy hitters of the Lost Generation and WW II eras. Though my favorites are the Beats and slightly later -- Kerouac, Burroughs, Bukowski and Tom Wolfe, not to mention that fellow in my avatar box.

I'd also definitely recommend Philip Roth -- dude's a God -- as well as the aforementioned Mailer and the other WWII-vet writers. Plus, if you've never gotten into the previous generation -- Hemmingway, Fitzgerald, etc. -- they're worth reading, definitely.

Going outside America, I can't recommend Gabriel Garcia Marquez enough. Heck, it's almost worth learning Spanish so you can read it in the original language!

19. Well, it could be new to you.
Forgive me for having the temerity to offer suggestions! :P

Kidding aside, Marquez is freakin' awesome. 100 Years of Solitude is his best work -- and one of the best novels of all time, for that matter -- but all his stuff's real good.
