Poll question: Do You Take Naps During the Day?
I have for most of my life; even as a kid.

2. Not unless it's absolutely necessary.
I have enough trouble with getting a full night's sleep. Taking naps would mess me up even more.

3. I take about one nap a year
and always, always resent the time I spent doing it.

I've never been a napper. I can remember in kindergarten, lying on my little mat, just WILLING the time to pass till I could get up and play.

33. I'm with you. Never could.
Always thought I would miss something. And they actually make me feel worse...like I feel when I've eaten too much sugar.

4. When I nap...
it's only because I stayed up too late the night before.

7. I almost have to
I get so tired by the time I am done with work I can barely keep my eyes open. So I try to sleep for about 20 minutes or so. Anything more and I am just groggy after. It helps get rid of my headaches if I get one. Like tonight- I had a massive headache (or one that was at least threatening to be) and taking a nap got rid of it totally.

25. 20 minutes seems to be the magic number. More than that and, as you said, you get
groggy. Study upon study bears that out.

9. Sometimes, but I work odd hours
I start work at 2:30 am, so I sometimes take an afternoon nap if I didn't get to bed early enough the night before.

10. I lay down but don't sleep.
I just go to work, go to bed, go to work, go to bed, go to work, go to bed. But I never let myself sleep past 7-8 Am or before 10-11 pm.

12. I'm Greek, I think it's in my DNA to need a nap in the afternoon.
Although it's hard to do at work!

Naps are really good for you though. I've read studies showing that people would be a lot healthier if they took a 20-minute nap in the afternoon.

13. I would love to take a nap
on the weekends but I can't! If I do, I conk out for several hours. I'll lay down around one in the afternoon and the next thing I know, my husband is waking me up asking if we're going to have dinner! And I physically feel like shit after sleeping that long midday, too.

14. The key to successful napping
is to keep it to 20 or 30 minutes!

I have an internal alarm that doesn't allow me to nap longer. I just had a great 30 minute nap, and feel great.

It does take practice!

15. I didn't have one this afternoon and now I'm all grumpy
I had to deal with a client - on my day off, on Friday, late afternoon, and 3 calls to tech support later - and now I can barely f*cking speak.

16. I get a headache if I don't get a nap.
Plus I get over-tired and then can't fall asleep. I'm on a really crazy sleep schedule.

20. I have SEVERE obstructive sleep apnea and until I got on a CPAP
machine, I fell asleep multiple times per day and HAD to take at least one real nap EVERY day. Now after a year I rarely need one - I would say maybe a half dozen to a dozen in the past year. I like them and think they should be part of the culture (and they used to be) where I live, especially in the summer. I just don't need them as desperately as I used to.

26. Do You Have a lot of Sinus Problems
especially in the winter

I use CPAP and have a heated humidifier, but i still have sinus problems anyway and the CPAP doesn't help matters.

27. I have been amazed at all the problems I DIDN'T have with the thing!
Thought I would need a full face mask because of the REALLY bad mouth breathing - nope, miraculously the mouth stays shut (no more drooling!)

Thought the fall allergies would be a problem - nope (generic clariton and machine = no night symptoms at all.

Thought a winter cold might be a real B**** - nope. It did take about 30 minutes of effort but it cleared everything back and I breathed through my nose all night.

Thought the heated humidifier would be really handy - decided I don't like it - you might try NOT using it, the moisture might actually be making your sinuses swell... there is a good web forum to check out/ask questions here: http://www.apneasupport.org/index.php

I am a totoally motivated user, so that may be part of it. A lifetime of not sleeping and the first night with the settings right convinced me. WOW

23. Yes. It's good to get a 20-minute escape from the pain, and the puppy really enjoys
snoozing on the couch with me as well.

But to be serious: There's a TON of research that shows the benefit of a nap during the day. We Americans, though, have been conditioned to think of it as being lazy.

30. Yup. Not always when I want to sleep either, but I do...
Happened at school, while driving, at work, at home, one time while... well, never mind that one... but I do nap and I don't like it. Rest is for the weary, sleep is for the dead. We're living, I don't see why our lifespan has to be wasted by snoozin' when we ought to be out boozin'. :D
