4. Yes!
Once they trade away Helton we'll be all set to rock in the World Series :sarcasm:

I still maintain that my mom and I could run that team better by doing nothing at all. Hell, if we'd kept half of the above average players we've traded away over the years for nothing we'd be in contention for our crappy division. Good thing I adopted the Red Sox in 2001 as my AL alternative to the Rox. I love ya, Colorado, but I wanted some action. Go Broncos and Nuggs too!

12. I used to be a HUGH basketball fan
Absolutely fanatical for the Lakers in the late '60s-early '70s.

Then, gradually, they changed the rules until basketball became this:

•Shooting is prohibited unless it's a dunk or from beyond 22 feet.

•Dribbling is optional within a 15-foot radius of the basket.

•Defense is prohibited.

•So is passing.

•There shall be a minimum of one (1) fight per game.

Oddly enough, with no defense and everybody shooting 3's, you don't see many teams score 100 anymore.

Also, I don't pay attention to baseball until after the All-Star break. I used to follow the whole season, but I'm too busy now. I just wait until after the All-Star break to look, because it's more exciting. Also, they've still got 2,000 games left to play, so I'm not missing too much.

30. Pretty safe bet
that neither of those umps made it out of A ball.

Worst baseball tirade I ever saw was in a California League game in 1984. This guy with Modesto, Jose Tolentino, went absolutely berserk on the plate ump. Three or four of his teammates held him back while he hollered stuff like "You're SHIT! You're gonna DIE!" I got several photos of it and sold 'em to the ump (at cost) for his report.

Funny part was, he got called up the next day and had to serve his suspension in Albany. He made it to the majors in '91 for a cup of coffee with Houston and was later a Spanish broadcaster for the Angels.

32. Go White Sox!
One on my favorite baseball memories involved the first pre-season game of the Chicago White Sox.

I had grown up in the Chicago area and was close to completing my first year at Western Michigan Univ., in Kalamazoo. I lived on the top floor of the dormitory and I was barely able to pull in an AM radio broadcast from Chicago.

There I was, with a big case of spring fever, a longing for something familiar and a crackling AM radio with the volume turned all the way up.

At the appointed time, Harry Carey's voice came through all the crackling on the radio. Yes, Harry Carey was the White sox announcer before he finished his career with the Cubs.

I can't remember exactly what he said, but it was something to the effect: " Hello again from sunny Sarasota, Florida...", but I DO remember what he said next "...and it is a beautiful day for baseball.".

Somehow, for one brief moment, all was right with universe.

I now live in SW Michigan, where the temps are in the single digits and spring fever is setting in.

Bring on baseball! Thanks Oeditpus Rex.

38. Right there with ya, man
Spring starts, for me, with the first baseball broadcast. That's the day it feels like everything's gonna be all right.

Some of my earliest baseball memories involve waiting for sundown so I could pull in KFI from 300 miles away. Back then, it was Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett. Doggett died 10 years ago, while Vinny's been in the Dodgers' booth since 1950. In-freaking-credible.

Hey, did you know Jim Bouton's a WM alum?

I didn't follow WMU's baseball program closely, but was aware that it turned out some good players though.

I'm gonna have to track down the spring training broadcast schedule soon and mark my calendar for the first week in March.

39. It's not a done deal
The commissioner's office rejected his contract about a week ago and, well...

It would seem that a player would be delighted if the commissioner's office struck from a contract he signed a clause that benefited the club and not the player. That's what happened with the contract that Barry Bonds signed last Monday with the San Francisco Giants.

But is Bonds happy? No, he is not.

That's why he has refused to sign the altered contract the Giants sent to him two days later. People on both sides of the issue said Friday that Bonds wanted the Giants to do something about another contract clause because he was unhappy it became public knowledge.

That provision is the indictment clause, which would allow the Giants to terminate the $15.8 million contract if Bonds were indicted on charges stemming from the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative steroid distribution case.

http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070204/SPT0401/702040434/1072/SPT04

And...

Giants owner Peter Magowan sent a letter to about 27,000 season-ticket holders this week explaining why the club decided to re-sign free-agent slugger Barry Bonds for another season.

The team had heard a variety of opinions from many of its fans during recent months regarding Bonds, who will begin the 2007 season 22 homers shy of breaking Hank Aaron's career record of 755.

The 42-year-old Bonds' $15.8 million, one-year contract had been completed Monday night, but the sides then had differing views of certain language in the deal and Bonds had yet to sign a revised version as of Friday.

Magowan's letter addressed Bonds' reported failed amphetamines test in 2006. The New York Daily News reported last month that when Bonds first learned of the result, he attributed it to a substance he took from teammate Mark Sweeney's locker.

49. nothing funny about the real Rockies
I'm afraid.

Just another huge influx of "AAAA" utility players and injured over-the-hill free agent has-beens.

Just another offseason trade of their best pitcher, huge roster turnover . . .

They do have one of the largest collections of fundie Christian jocks in the free world, but hardly anyone wants to pay to see that.

The current ownership and GM might just be the only thing in America less competent than the bush cabal.
