Anyone have experience with Progressive Insurance?
We are looking at a new car because mine is a piece of crap. Money is tight so we are trying to keep costs down as much as possible so we have been shopping around for insurance. I just checked on Progressive's website and found out their rate was almost too good to be true. That makes me nervous. We are going to see our AAA agent this afternoon to hear what they have to say because Mrs. Giant Robot did not understand the quote that was given to her and I am at work and cannot call there and spend that much time getting it explained to me. So does anyone have insurance through Progressive or know people that have it? Any experiences to share?

2. I don't give a damn if they're a "blue" company
They are the ones that started linking credit scores to car insurance rates. I had had their insurance for years, and had something on my credit pop up, and they put up my insurance by almost 30%. I've never even had a parking ticket in my life. To me, neither of these actions are either progressive or blue.

So, I changed to GEICO a few years ago. My rates are lower than with Progressive, I get an additional professional discount because of my profession, and their CS has been way better than Progressive ever was.

Just my opinion.

3. That is odd
Because my credit score is in the can. I think its a negative number, I'm not sure. Progressive's quote beat Geico's by a wide margin and I think that my quote was impacted pretty severely by my credit. Thanks for the input because I need all of it I can get right now.

4. Some states have laws about using credit scores for insurance rates
Maybe that's it?

5. I'll weigh in on Progressive's side...

...we've not had any claims, but we have had our credit 'challenges' and their rates have remained stable and low.

6. They're alright to start, but their rates don't go as low as some others. And they've screwed up on
payments before. I was in an accident once and they paid me first instead of the garage telling me to then pay the garage, which I did. Then they pulled the money out of my account insisting that they had to pay the garage directly. Well, too late, I already had, and now my bank account was around negative $3,000. I spent around two days fighting with them, until they relented and paid me directly again. Fortunately my bank was very nice (something to do with banking with them since I was one year old and the bank being a small town bank) and covered the overpayment with no fees allowing me to get my car. Still, as soon as I could I jumped from them. That was typical of dealing with them. Very friendly and nice, but their payment department is a mess. Once for some reason they paid my car loan company 500 dollars. Why? Who the hell knows. Two weeks later they withdrew that payment and I had to explain to my car loan company that Progressive was, well, a bunch of weirdos.

7. They were slow on my theft claim. VERY slow.
State Farm is more expensive, but they're ridiculously fast with claims and made no effort to get out of paying when my car was stolen. I switched to Progressive despite their awful commercials because they were $60 a month cheaper, my car was stolen again, and it took me a month of Sundays to get paid.

I'm back with State Farm now. The peace of mind is worth it.

9. Whatever the quote was, IT IS TRUE!!!
They are pretty good with rates and claims. I had to do a claim with them on two different occassions and I got them processed and a check in a matter of days. With one of the claims the adjuster that came out to the scene printed out the check right on the spot. I recommend them on the basis that I had a very good experience with them.

10. I've used Progressive on my motorcycles
for years and never had any problems. They weigh in about 30% below Geico, but maybe that's because I've been using them for years. Quick on claims.

11. Not a bad outfit
Avoid Allstate - they are gangsters. They have a corporate policy of only paying 80% of what they owe.

State Farm is good but expensive.

For auto I bought through Costco. Cheaper than everyone.

If you want good service, get an insurance company that does not do a lot of business in your state. Counter-intuitive? Yes it is. Here is why - they have no infrastructure to process your claim in your state. For example, they will not send you to "their" bodyshop which will use cheap parts. So you can get your car fixed at the dealer. There are other benefits also. (My Costco company does not write many policies in my state!)

13. I've been with Progressive for a few years
and have been pleased with their rates and how well my claim was handled when I was rear-ended by somebody who decided not to stop at the same stop sign I was stopped at! I had my settlement check in hand and was in a new car in less than a week.

15. I've been with them for eight years
They were the ONLY company that could handle a quite minor requirement on my insurance - long story short, I needed to carry an SR-22 in both Vermont and California because of a prior suspension.

Farmer's couldn't do it.
State Farm couldn't do it.
AAA couldn't do it.
Several other companies couldn't do it.

I called Geico who assured me they could because they were originally set up to help service members who frequently change state. After a very frustrating 2 months! during which time money, faxes, phone calls and repeated assurances were gone through, they admitted they couldn't do it either (but told me they wouldn't refund my money! They did).

I've never had a single problem with Progressive. Their rates have been more than reasonable, their service has been great, the one time I had to use them for a minor claim, they were prompt and efficient, when I bought a new car, they were helpful and put things together so I was able to drive it home from Vermont and their web site is easy to navigate.

It would take a lot to get me to change now.

16. Well, I've been hit by someone that had Progressive and I hated their service.
I had a brand new vehicle, I mean like less than a 1000 miles on it new, and someone hit me alongside the driver's side of the vehicle.

The claims guy insisted that I take my vehicle to where they wanted me to go. So only recycled parts would be used, no guarantee on the work, nothing. The claims guy came up with a number($) to go get it fixed on my own, that was so low it was silly and came to personally hand me the check, which I basically told him to stuff.

It wasn't major damage, but I insisted on getting it fixed somewhere that would at least guarantee the workmanship. Well, the Progressive claims guy found out where and attempted to hand over the previously refused check to the shop that had my car. The check didn't cover half of the bill. I called the Progressive guy to come pick up his check. Surprisingly, when I told them I would go to court to get the right check amount, they handed over a new check that paid for my damage.

17. I had them for 7 years, and no problems, good rates...
easy to pay online, you get to talk to a human, etc.,

I dropped them and went with Century Insurance when I bought a house. Progressive doesn't do homeowners insurance...

18. I have Progressive; had one bad experience with them.
I got in a wreck, which by law was my fault (rear-ended a truck). Guy drove an old, beat-up truck, and he said he didn't want to make a claim. I did, though, because my car was fairly new.

Took it to the repair shop, and later got a call from the owner, saying that the claims adjuster wanted them to just "fix" the hood, instead of replacing it. Well, it couldn't just be "fixed" because of how it was made, unless the insurance company wanted to pay even MORE for that than it would cost to get a new hood. The CA just couldn't seem to understand that, so I told the owner of the shop that I wanted a new hood, and if necessary, I would pay the extra cost for that (above my deductible).

Well, fortunately for me, the owner found a parts wholesaler who had several brand new hoods for my make/model/year of car, and was able to get it for the same cost as a used hood.

Basically, I've had no problem with Progressive, except for that incident.

19. I currently have Progressive
but I am switching to Geico because I can save $480 a year. I had a wreck last year and my premiums went up $240 with Progressive. They did settle the claim within days so I have to give them that.

20. I sure wish we in Massachusetts could even ask such a question.
This state has "no fault" insurance and the state regulates all auto insurance. It is so bogus. We pay the same as everyone else and have never had an accident. The person with a terrible driving record pays the same as a good driver. The only time you get a break is when you have homeowners with the same company. Used to be 10% discount, now it is down to 5%. It would be a pleasure to shop around for insurance.
