February is my least favourite month.

That's because this is the month I have to endure the great unwashed masses' pronouncing it "Feb-you-ary". I can hardly wait till March.

But us southerners tend to shorten words anyway!

aside from dropping G's at the end of words like "running", that is...Southern accents tend to elongate a lot of words, actually (splitting the diphthong in words like "July" so it's two syllables instead of one and sounds like "JOO-lie", for instance)

Fixing to is fixin' a (only when talking fast), etc.

I've lived in the South most of my life. Don't have an accent, though. (Or rather, I do, but it's "General American" and not Southern.) Still hear "you're not from around here, are you?" occasionally, despite having lived here 20 years.

the word "July" has only one syllable? Or are you talking about the "Ju" part being pronounced as if it were two syllables (e.g. "Jee-you" + "lie").

Just wondering 'cause last I checked, July was a two-syllable word, regardless of one's dialect....

sorry...that's what I meant by splitting the diphthongal vowel sound (which seems to be more common in Southern accents than in any other American dialect)

And those who think it's too hard to say "bru" should go to a sports bar and watch the Boston "Bewins" play, and maybe kick back a few "bews".

It's particularly galling to hear newsreaders, reporters, and announcers say it, because they're supposedly somewhat erudite and they're being paid money to pronounce things correctly.

Another example where "you" raised its ugly head happened at the end of the Cold War when the Balkan states were all gaining independence, and Peter Mansbridge of The National kept referring to Lithuania as "Lith-you-ania" instead of "Lith-wayne-ia." Being in a bilingual country, I've also heard the term "bi-ling-gyoo-al", which gets up my wick no end; it's pronounced "bi-ling-gwal". At least Mansbridge says "February" correctly, though, even if the reporters don't always.

Sportscasters -- well, I don't expect much from them since they're generally bigdumbjocks who don't know better, so I can let it slide.

It is the month in which I found out that I had cancer.

...that it also becomes the month you find out it's in remission and that you're well on the way to being cancer-free.

It has been almost 20 years.

it's COLD and I hate winter. Makes it seem like the LONGEST month instead of the shortest....

But, my husband was born in February, so I can't TOTALLY hate it. :P

I look forward to March because there are more days over freezing than under, and Spring is just a hop, skip, and jump away. :crazy:

but here we haven't even had that much "cold" weather compared to most on this board. We are just getting below freezing temps.

because, frankly, I've never cared for the sound of the audible 'r' - it just sounds stupid to my ears. So, what can I say; I'm a "Feb-you-ary" criminal!:)

Perhaps "Feb-you-ary" is more like a neologism.

Ashley Tisdale - Headstrong (I find her attractive, but she can't sing very well - and while the CD is better than Paris Hilton's, the music is mostly R&B/hip hop lite with sappy ballads. You can tell that Sarah Hudson is a better singer when you compare their versions of "Unlove You."
