But the truth is, a large majority of people on DU aren't like that. Sadly, when certain issues arise it becomes a huge flame thread and typically it is a hand full of people that are saying stupid things, and some passionate people join in. One thing I have learned, no one..and I mean NO ONE likes to be told how they should think. People will defend their thoughts, it's just the way it is.
It would be a beautiful world if everyone agreed with me, but it isn't going to ever happen. There is also people who don't understand that not everyone is born with the knowledge and compassion that some other people have developed through the years.
I have seen people who ask a question in all sincerity and get torn to shreds by people who think that everyone should know exactly what is considered "progressive". Hell, I stopped asking questions about certain things I wasn't particularly too familiar with a while ago around here. I've had a pretty cool life, done lots of things and know a lot of people, but I doubt I will truly ever know what it is like to be a woman, gay, black, a parent, a Latino, a lesbian, Jewish, a midget, brown-eyed, severely handicapped, rich, a genius, transgendered, a soldier and many other things. Although I know most of those people, I have know way of having a 100% understanding as to what it is like to be them.
DU is not the place to ask about different people either. Too many people don't have the patience or understanding to deal with people who are ignorant of certain things due to lack of experience with them.
A basic sense of compassion is all that is really needed in most situations, but that goes both ways. I can just say that as for myself, my heart always goes out to the "underdog" because I do understand that part of life. Not that I consider myself one, but I was raised with a sense for compassion to those who are hurt by others.
Oh well, enough of my yappin' again.
I thought your post was wonderful and I hope this feeling you have now passes.
