DUer Recommendations
Sometimes we're all afraid to try something new because we don't want to spend money on something different, so we end up staying with the same old stuff.

So here's your chance to impart your product wisdom to other DUers, and recommend some product--whether it's cosmetic, food, cleaning, or otherwise household based, it doesn't matter. Just as long as it's something you believe in and a product you trust, and something you would happily tell all your friends about.

For my first turn (I'm hoping there will be a second turn and that this thread doesn't just drop like a lead balloon), I would like to tell about a product I pick up at Trader Joe's. There are these "Facial Cleaning Pads" that work beautifully even on dry skin. They have witch hazel and tea tree oil, and I love the scent. They're put out by Desert Essence, and are far better than the more expensive cosmetic pads from Neutrogena or other big companies. In size, they're about the size of the Stridex pads.

So tell us about a product that you think other DUers would find appealing and should buy!

1. Roasted (bell) peppers, and sundried tomatoes
to me are the 2 biggest bargains in taste AND nutrition.

Roasted peppers come in jars. You get about 3 peppers that have been roasted (skinned), seeded and ribs removed. They are great on salads, roast beef sandwiches, pizza, just about anywhere you would use bell pepper. In addition to saving time and hassle, they are cheaper than fresh peppers by about 50%.

SUndried tomatoes vary in quality. I like California's better than what I have gotten from Italy so far. They have an awesome texture too. I cut them in julienne strips and rehydrate in a small dish of warm water, unless they are going into something with its own liquid. Salads, pasta, omlettes, wraps. Much much much cheaper than fresh or canned.

4. Good pizza crust
Go buy a load of Pillsbury french bread, the kind that comes raw in a tube. Unroll it (very gently), flatten it out, trim off the corners, coat a hot baking stone with olive oil, throw the dough on it, top, and bake.

It makes a tasty thin-crust pizza that tastes a lot better than the crap "pizza dough" that Pillsbury markets. I personally like to powder both sides with flour before putting on the pizza stone.

Mmmm, good...

9. A recommendation for men on personal grooming paraphernalia -
toss out your multi-blade razors and get one of these (Merkur Futur adjustable double-edge safety razor):

Or, if you can find one, one of these (Gillette adjustable double-ege safety razor):

Either will shave more closely than the three- or five-bladed absurdity you're currently using (because it doesn't clog as easily, for one) and blades cost between $1.50 and $4.50 for 10 (vs about $8 for four replacement cartridges for a Mach 3 or similar razor). It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's definitely worth making the switch.

Edited on Sat Feb-10-07 03:25 AM by Spider Jerusalem
Nearly half a century old, and well taken care of, it should last as long again. Somehow I don't really think you could expect the same of something like a Mach 3...not to mention that aesthetically, it's a beautiful object in itself, instead of sacrificing form to function.

26. I remember one of those spoof advertisements

27. Yeah...and then there was this piece from the Onion:
(it wasn't too long after this that Gillette actually introduced a five-bladed razor...heh)

February 18, 2004 | Issue 40•07

Would someone tell me how this happened? We were the fucking vanguard of shaving in this country. The Gillette Mach3 was the razor to own. Then the other guy came out with a three-blade razor. Were we scared? Hell, no. Because we hit back with a little thing called the Mach3Turbo. That's three blades and an aloe strip. For moisture. But you know what happened next? Shut up, I'm telling you what happened—the bastards went to four blades. Now we're standing around with our cocks in our hands, selling three blades and a strip. Moisture or no, suddenly we're the chumps. Well, fuck it. We're going to five blades.

Sure, we could go to four blades next, like the competition. That seems like the logical thing to do. After all, three worked out pretty well, and four is the next number after three. So let's play it safe. Let's make a thicker aloe strip and call it the Mach3SuperTurbo. Why innovate when we can follow? Oh, I know why: Because we're a business, that's why!

You think it's crazy? It is crazy. But I don't give a shit. From now on, we're the ones who have the edge in the multi-blade game. Are they the best a man can get? Fuck, no. Gillette is the best a man can get.

What part of this don't you understand? If two blades is good, and three blades is better, obviously five blades would make us the best fucking razor that ever existed. Comprende? We didn't claw our way to the top of the razor game by clinging to the two-blade industry standard. We got here by taking chances. Well, five blades is the biggest chance of all.

35. They might carry the Merkurs at upscale department stores.
And a cutlery shop might be a good place to look; they frequently sell straight razors and classic-style safety razors. (I'd recommend a decent shaving brush--the best are made of badger hair, which is highly water-absorbent--and good shaving cream or soap to go with it, too.)

38. It's probably easier to find one online, actually.
There are several online retailers that carry them (and you can find the classic Gillettes on Ebay). The razor itself is going to be somewhere in the $30-45 range, most likely (but they're quite solid and very well-made, and last a lifetime, so it's a one-time purchase).

I highly recommend Aveeno lotion. The regular kind. There's no scent so if you have a fragrance you wear, it won't compete.
But, it's not just the lack of scent, Aveeno really heals and moisturizes very, very dry skin.

Expensive.($20.95 for 8.4 oz)
Hard to get (only a few stores scattered around US; have to use mail-order from Canada myself; takes about 2 weeks)
Works WONDERS on any area of the body you would need a lotion; including the face.
No animal testing; mostly natural ingredients; handmade.

Love the forum too; addictive and has a great section on other like companies and etailers that will enable you to spend money like water on good-smeling and well-working usually all-natural body and candle stuff. My guilty sin.

If you travel a lot, it's really nice to have one recharger for your digital phone, iPod, cell phone, and laptop. (Not all laptops will take the iGo, sadly). It's a bit fiddly to work out all of the different bits at first, and it's not cheap, but it's so cool to be able to just pack one thing, and not worry about four different cords.

46. Trader Joe's No Fat Greek Style Yogurt
I used to buy the Fage brand of yogurt, but TJ's non-fat is amazing. It is so rich and creamy, I cannot believe I'm eating something that is non-fat. I have it every morning with fresh berries, nuts, and honey. Sometimes I throw in flax seed meal and oats. It's delicious in recipes too. I cannot imagine eating some pre-fab fruit on the bottom yogurt ever again.

51. Olay Definity Cream Cleanser, for starters...
It's new, and of course I had to try it. I wasn't disappointed! It's about $7 for a tube, and it works very, very well. :)

LUSH Alkmaar Soap. I fell in love with this soap after buying some at the LUSH shop in Edinburgh when I was in Scotland a few years ago. It is absolutely, positively the yummiest soap!
