Now my tale is told
Edited on Tue Jan-06-04 11:04 PM by WilliamPitt
Some of you might recall my posting a variety of threads last winter and fall about my plans to get married. You also might have noticed that I never put up a thread announcing the fact that I had, in fact, gotten married. That's because I didn't. The wedding was supposed to have taken place in May, but in April a number of things took place that required me to call the thing off. I'm not getting into it, so don't ask, but sufficed to say it was the best - nay, only - decision to be made under the circumstances.

April, May and June were like death. I moved out of the apartment I was sharing with my fiancee and occupied my mother's house. It was empty, as she was getting ready to try and sell it, and had departed for New Hampshire. I was still teaching through these months, and all the kids knew I was getting married. I couldn't tell them what had happened, because they would have freaked, and right around the crunch-time end of the year. So I had to go to work each day and shine it on like everything was cool.

Starting in June, I went on my book tour, and it lasted through most of October and into November. That was like my own personal Hajj; I was constantly on the road and never in my own place. My own place, by this time, was a single room in Harvard Square in which I both worked and slept, and seldom left when I was actually at station. I did a lot of writing, and a lot of thinking, and suffered.

Somewhere in October, after I got back from Europe, my ex-fiancee and I began a serious dialog about what had happened. I had not seen much of her since April, and there was a lot to be dealt with. But we put on our hard hats - the ones with those little flashlights on the brim - and did some serious emotional mining. Much to both our pleasure, we found all the gold and diamonds that had been buried in the April apocalypse. The treasure was still there.

So a few weeks ago, I packed up my little room in Harvard Square and moved back in with her. I am sitting tonight in a small office on the second floor of our apartment in Cambridge. She is downstairs asleep on the couch with the cat on her head. For the first time in almost a year, I am feeling like a normal person again, and not like a refugee or an old sad bastard. Her parents, who wanted to stab me to death with spoons a few months ago, welcomed me into their home for Christmas with open, happy arms. A good sign. And marriage is back on the table again.

So, if I've been surly, or insane, or angry, or absent here in these last several months, now you know why. If you were wigged out by how much I spent on that dinner, it was for her and for us and for hope, and so now you know why.

Now my tale is told.

.... I'd wondered why I never saw a wedding/marriage thread, and I'm glad to hear you're happy again. I strongly second the eloping strategy. My husband and I wed on a Friday morning at NYC City Hall, and I have never, ever, EVER given it a second thought.

At least you remain happy. Relationships are so complex sometimes from the reasons why people get together to begin with to why they stay to why things may or may not work out. I hope yours works out and happiness and much fullfillment await you. She's a lucky woman.

41. I'm glad things are working out for you Will
Obviously, I don't know what happened between you, but I do know that living with a writer (as wife, husband, partner, whatever) is extremely difficult and trying, as I'm sure you realize.

Writer's lives are chock full of insecurity, both artistically, emotionally and financially. It takes a strong person to withstand those stormy waters. I'm glad she's still in the picture for you.

Then again, I'm biased. I'm married to a writer and ride a Honda Metropolitan Scooter. Your gal is marrying a writer (hopefully) and rides a Honda Metropolitan Scooter. Now, the question is....Is she my evil twin or am I hers? ;-)

Good luck to you both! :toast:

44. I feel a POPCORN post coming on!!!!
(to the tune of Gilligan's Isle)

Come sit right down
and you'll hear a tale
It will only take a bit
about the extravagant love life of
one Mr William Pitt

He quit his day job
to expose the ills
emanating from DC
he wrote till his fingers turned
cobalt blue
and posted it in GD

The articles brought him fame a bit
but they made him a target too
as some who only wished they had guts
gave him crap up the wazoo

he posted on
his love life gone
he traveled far
books were sold
he worked it out
with a chic night out
and now his tale is told!!!!

(OK the TALE part in the header prompted this. I know I could have done better but it is late)

49. There are several smart moves in that story
1)"When in doubt, back out"--you two had a lot of work to do before marriage, and
2)You've been doing it, hard hats and all!
3) It also sounds like the time apart was needed to re-set priorities, so add a silver lining to that gold and diamond horde...

Glad to hear it's better. Remember the old Irish proverb:
Níl leigheas ar an ngrá ach pósadh.
There is no cure for love but marriage.

65. I'm glad you found the gold and diamonds.
"April, May and June were like death."
I know exactly what you mean. I also know how it feels to look back on the depth of it, after you've come back to life. It makes you appreciate the relationship even more.

Best wishes to you both.

66. Good for you!
You seem like a person who has a lot to offer in a relationship (of course I said that about my couch potato husband 7 years ago). Good luck to you and your fiance'. It sounds like you two will be just fine!

:)

71. You're the first person I've ever said this to
Go get an Elvis impersonator, wear jeans, and just get married. I will think you are sane if you do that.

Seriously, I'm happy for you. Having a partner and commitment is a wonderful thing. :toast:

Jeans with a baseball bet - one of those baseball hats that truckers wear.
