Coolest animal picture I ever took, just a half hour ago!
Edited on Sat Feb-10-07 05:44 PM by Solon
Now THIS is unusual in my area!

Taken from literally the back door of my house.

ON EDIT: This is a CROPPED picture, to make it suitable for Internet usage, I have a full, uncropped image under this directory, filename: Deer.jpg

2. They hopped the fence on the far side of the picture...
When I, stupidly, tried to walk out onto my deck and get a slightly closer picture. The picture, I think, sucks, but the digital camera I have has no optical zoom, so it was the best I could do at the time. I was literally just standing in my sliding glass door frame when I took the picture. It took me almost a minute to OPEN the door, so I wouldn't scare them for this picture.

They jumped into two yards, then a neighbor down there walked out of his house coughing, and they were gone.

3. That's too bad
I'm missed some great shots because I couldn't zoom in.

Maybe they will come back again and you will get better shots.

4. Hope so, though I don't know if they'll come back...
They looked beautiful when they took off though, so graceful, they cleared the fences without touching them, even the smaller one.

The backyard they were in when I took the picture is one whose house is currently unoccupied by any people at the moment. The owner of the property is looking for new renters, again. We get like 4 new neighbors a year in that house.

6. I don't know how hungry they are...
I don't want to get the wrong idea here, but I sorta live in the "transition" area, as you can see from the pic, we live on a hill, though not at top, over this hill, and about 3 streets over is a small forested area, just beyond that is a four lane road, with a Deer crossing warning on it, then mostly farmland(corn) and more forests in the north, and more civilization and roads to the south, including Interstate 70. Its unusual to see deer in my neighborhood because of the noise, I would imagine, though I don't think they strayed far from their stomping grounds, so to speak.

I'll be honest, this is the closest I've been to deer outside of petting zoos. We were thinking of calling animal control, the SOP is to tranquilize them and relocate them away from people, which is safer for them, by far. But, by the time it occurred to us, they were gone.

8. To be honest, I don't know...
As I said up thread, the house next door is unoccupied, and the gate for the backyard fence is left open. Though, I don't see deer wanting to walk through a carport to get to the backyard.

Also, if you looked at my uncropped picture, you would see a big tree in my yard, with a branch that extends all the way to the fence that we share with that property the deer were in. There is a "dent" I guess you could say, in that fence, that's ice storm damage, the END of that branch fell from our tree and onto that fence, denting it, and also ripped the electrical wire off the neighbor's house, literally ripped the meter right off the house. Luckily, the power was already out, both at our house and the other house, at the time. We called AmerenUE and they came out, chainsawed the branch, and then fixed the power line.

About a week ago, I went into the yard and cleaned up as best as I could, even cut into about 5 foot sections, that branch weighed a ton.
