Everyone hates lawyers until they need one
My SIL is going through some hell at work - her employer is threatening to pull her license without any hard evidence of malfeasance on her part, just circumstantial evidence. It was basically David vs. Goliath - if she doesn't play their game, they'll ruin her.

She didn't know where to turn, and called us crying hysterically. Even her union had told her "Too bad. Even if you didn't do it, you'll have to 'confess' or lose your license - we're not willing to help."

She had only one thin hope - she had put a call into her childhood sweetheart, who is her city's Biggest Name among Big Name Defense Lawyers. He's Johnny Cochran, F.L. Bailey and Denny Crane all wrapped up into one (with no Mad Cow) -- an immediately recognizable name. She was hoping he would write a letter for her, or tell her who would be able to help her.

Well, he called back yesterday, and agreed not only to help her, but to go with her personally to her hearing (if there is one, once they see who is representing her).

Sometimes, you gotta love lawyers.

16. Is that you, Joanna????
Note: Joanna is my secretary. While I am indeed the smartest, kindest, most thoughtful person she has ever met, she would never say so ...

5. Lawyers get scapegoated
They are so easily right in the way. Especially by people who think that a lawyer is an excuse to evade all responsibility. A lawyer gives a client advice about their legal position - they are not the guarantor of the client's happiness, and it is not their job to twist the system just so the client gets what they want - but unfortunately there are many over the age of majority who believe that is exactly what a lawyer is - I sit back while you fix everything so that the world is running the way I want it to.

7. I've been fortunate to know several wonderful lawyers
People who were both lawyers and very good people. And I had a court-appointed attorney once who, upon finding out about a completely unrelated problem, wrote a letter for me that resolved it.

Plus I have a sister who's a lawyer and I love her. I'm glad your SIL is getting the help she deserves.

8. Mother of a lawyer here!
He is a very ethical, caring professional as are his colleagues in his office. It is a shame the way movies and TV stereotype lawyers sometimes. He went into public interest law to help people, not for financial gain.

It doesn't surprise me at all about your SIL's friend offering his personal assistance. It's like any other profession... the few "bad apples" sometimes give everyone the wrong impression.

9. Amen! You said it right.

And lawyers are scapegoated, as another poster said.

Sure there are some shyster lawyers. There are also some unethical and dishonest people in every other profession.

10. I love my lawyer
I mean, I loved my lawyer when he got the charges against me dropped. I guess I don't really love him anymore, though. But if you need a good lawyer in Chicago, let me know and I'll pass on his info.

14. I hated my divorce lawyer, even in the midst of the proceedings
She was a total waste of money. If it had gotten very contentious, I would have fired her. I went to her because her ad all said she'd do mediation. That's what I wanted, but she wouldn't do it. And she was bad about returning calls, office hours, etc.

I learned later that she was going through a VERY nasty divorce herself at the time she was working on mine. I think she should have recused herself, and helped me find other representation. But that wouldn't have increased her billable hours, now, would it?

Lawyers!!

17. That's why I refuse to do divorce law ...
Everybody hates everybody, nobody ends up happy, and the lawyers get blamed for it all.

18. Not everyone hates lawyers
Lawyers who work for the people are my heroes.
They represent hope for justice.
Corporate lawyers are awful though.
