Am I the only one who doesn't get Tom Cruise?
What's the big deal about him, anyway? He's no great shakes as an actor...he's just playing Tom Cruise in every role he's done.

Why is he so popular?

1. I don't think he's much of an actor, but he does have a lot of on-screen
presence. Still, not a fan.

Who i really don't get his is talentless beard of an ex-wife. I mean, Nicole cannot act, and she has no presence whatsoever. Whenever she's on camera, you look everywhere except at her--no star quality at all.

2. I'm lost on that one too, but-

I can tell you that my wife would LOVE to "get" Tom, even though she's a foot taller than him.

3. I'm with you
I do not see the appeal. However, Paul Newman likes him a lot, and he's a pretty bright guy.

Great actor! But then again we all don't see the same thing when we look at something, do we?

6. There's the sexual tension, I guess. Is he? Isn't he?
He has bland good looks, in an All-American white-bread sort of way. Great in Magnolia, but the rest of his career is pretty bland.

7. He is a dealbreaker for me
I find him creepy, fake. Won't bother with a film he is in though I ws at last persuaded to see Magnolia. All my peeps told me that the rest of the film mitigated his appearance.
Yes indeed.

It is that Scientology thinhg - those folks are ded behind the eyes. I find it scary.

15. I thought Magnolia was the only role he was decent in because
he was playing an aggressive, scary, cult-leader-like person. Other than that role, his acting annoys me to no end because he is so obvious and overbearing.

8. "Playing Tom Cruise"... how true.
Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 11:22 AM by arwalden
Sometimes the actors own personalities or the roles they play become BIGGER than their actual acting ability.

It reminds me of how I'll always think of Fay Dunnaway.

No matter what role she ever plays, the opening credits might as well read "starring Fay Dunnaway as Joan Crawford as Lucy Smith"

Whacko and crappy actor.

13. Some might say it cured him of something that would risk a lawsuit....
If it were to be mentioned in a published article.

14. Is That A New Code Word? Dyslexia?
I have dyslexia. I'm going to be going to a dyslexia party next week and I sometimes go to dyslexia bars to hang out with other dyslexics.

Life is doog.

17. Yeah, that's it...
It was a terribly agonizing moment when I made that announcement to my parents: "Mom, Dad...I have something to tell you. I'm...dyslexic"

There was some yelling after that.

18. Does that mean you're only attracted to certain types of words?
Like homonyms, or something?

11. Beats me, I've never
cared for him much, either, I'm a woman and we're all supposed to just drool over him, but I don't get it either.

He's also an egotistical ass who forces the women in his life to walk in his shadow, like he did with Nicole Kidman and is doing now with Penelope Cruz. Notice how much better Nicole's career has been since they've split, and how little you hear now about Penelope.

12. OK but doesn't excite me
TC is ok in a bland sort of way. Perhaps that very blandness is part of his appeal. People get excited about the common. Having said that, he does seem to be a decent human being to friends and family.

TC doesn't excite my passions the way Johnny Depp does, now there's an artist.

16. I don't get him either
Always looks like he's on the quest for legitimacy in the form of an Oscar.

Never saw any REAL substance.

I'll always see him as the frat-boy behind the machine gun in "Taps"

26. I like him in the bar with Val Kilmer in Top Gun
You know the scene where they look like they're about to French ?
When they're all quiet and smiley and about 2 inches from each others face?
Mmmm, makes me shiver in that good way.
