Being laid off fuck

I've never had to go through this.

the time my company had fucked up my SSN, so I couldn't prove I had made ANY money that year, and thus couldn't file my taxes OR collect unemployment totally sucked. Plus my car died; and the company had gone through a change in ownership so to straighten it out I had to deal with three corparate headquarters, and my phone had been shut off--so I had to go into the office I didn't work in and use their phone.

What a pain in the ass.

On the plus side I had time to read the entire paper and spotted a round trip airfeare to Hawaii for $179 bucks (later reduced further to $129) it was leaving in four days. I had the time, so did my buddies so we went.

Since that one, it usually came as a elcome vacation. But I knew more or less when I'd be called back--if this is permanaet for you, well, that is much more unpleasant. Particularly the uncertainty and dislocation.

Just remember, keep maneuvering, look for openings. AKA Shuck and Jive.

Anyway, I am so sorry. That is an absolute bummer. There are just so many laid-off people in this country right now.

Call your friends. Get drunk. Yell. Throw darts at a photo of the company president. Get pissed. Feel miserable.

And the, get the resume in order. Ask everyone you know if they know anyone who's got an opening.

:hug: Take care of yourself and don't be ashamed to take advantage of all the benefits you can get. Is your company helping you with writing a resume, job search, etc.? Take advantage of it. Also be sure to get a GOOD number for reference. Some businesses are charging for this now (via a 900 number) and it's total bullshit.
Do you have credit cards? Make sure you notify them if you've been paying on any type of credit insurance. Make copies of all your forms and send them in as soon as possible.
I went through a layoff from Verizon a few years ago and they pulled the 900 number shit on us. Luckily I had a few other local references to try.
