Anyone have the "tried and true" method of answering the Salary Desired question?
I'm filling out an app for a job and I'm pretty sure they aren't going to seriously match what I make now, but it might be a place that offers some growth opportunities for me. So should I answer with what I make now, a range, or something else that I'm not thinking of? Just curious what everyone thinks.

1. "i am very flexible where salary is concerned
but would consider compensation that is in keeping with the mid to low end of the high range of what the market bears in this area for that particular position."

or something equally squirmy

10. I don't want to give them the impression that I'm desperate or anything.
So I want to avoid saying that I'm flexible, because I'm not. I didn't go seeking this job offer, they came to me, and I'm not moving unless they give me a reason to go.

I was thinking of trying something like, "I'm sure that your offer will be generous" So kind of squirmy, but batting the ball back into their court.

4. As a recrutier...
I already have a pretty fair idea of what someone makes at their current job based on company size/region/responsibilites/experience and so on. So if you were recrutied for the position, put what you currently make with a side note that you would like to discuss this issue.

6. 5K more than you're currently making.
Unless you've just received new training or have been getting salary-screwed by your current boss for a while.

12. I was thinking somewhere around that. I think I'm on the high end of my payscale, so that might
put me out of the running for this gig, but it's worth a shot. I have to balance between getting a bump in salary and the possibility of getting new career experience.

9. This will work, withoug fail...
instead of making a paper application, instead make a video application and when answering the question of salary, put your pinky to your mouth and say, 1 million dollars...

14. I always say that
I'm more comfortable discussing figures in person and then when it comes to being in-person I tell them I want them to put a figure on the table first because I want to know that they think I'm worth. 2x out of 3 their number was higher than I was going to ask for.

15. I'll have to mull that idea over. I'm preparing for it now and I'll be doing this
tomorrow. I'm a perfect fit for what they are looking for so I'm pretty sure that I'll be getting an offer.

16. Be careful...
the third time (of 3) they walked out on me and on follow-up said I put them on the spot and I wasn't a match for their culture. You have to have a feel for how they're going to respond.

17. I would say
that I consider salary just one part of the total compensation package, and would have to evaluate their offer in combination with other benefits offered.

I'm retired, though, and don't have much experience with that, so it may not be worth very much to you.

19. "Negotiable" is perfectly acceptable.
Once you get an interview, they can let you know what it pays.
