24. I am sorry to hear that, lizziegrace...it must be painful and difficult.
I am terrified of black ice and the thought of falling on it and breaking something. Happily, the parking lot where I work has been heavily salted. At home, I park in the garage underneath the building so it is dry.

Take care.

31. Details are forthcoming...
We were walking outside her office (also the place I work) and she slipped backwards on black ice and fell on her head and arm very hard. I was worried she'd hurt her head much worse than her arm, but saw there was no bleeding and she could sit up and stand without dizziness or other symptoms of something serious. She was alright driving (we figured me driving (as an inexperienced winter driver) in the crap Ohio has recently gotten would get us both into something worse). I asked her to call me when she got home, and a friend of hers took her to a minor emergency clinic where they confirmed the fracture.

Also... while I'd obviously much rather it hadn't happened at all, it happened on office property and therefore it's covered under worker's comp. :)

55. worker's comp . . .
not necessarily.

Was it during work hours or was she going to her car and leaving work?

Depending on the company - and the insurance carriers - they *could* give you flack over it. But even it's not covered under WC - it could be covered under their liability insurance. (Though they'd be better off filing it under WC - which they CAN if they want. Although, the claims adjuster *could* deny it depending. . .)

If you have any questions, let me know - PM if you prefer. A lot depends on the details, etc. . .

63. It's tax season
and I'm an accountant. We work all kinds of hours. I was leaving for the day. Would it make a difference if I was just going to lunch?

The parking lot was wet during the day but just barely after sunset, it froze over in spots. The building doors are unlocked until 7:00pm.

My boss backed out on his agreement to get me medical insurance when I started. I also don't get a dime when I'm not there. He will not define vacation, sick leave, holidays, etc.

The receptionist at the emergency clinic heard my story and handed me a Workers' Comp form. I hope they come through. If not, I'm screwed, yet again.

88. who owns the property?
Your boss sounds like a pill who'll give you a hard time no matter what. However, if he owns the property, he's better off letting it go the wc route.

If he doesn't own the property - the property owner is liable for injury incurred.

And technically, no, it's not worker's comp if you were leaving for the day. Worker's comp is for injury incurred during the course of your work.

BTW - Can you still work?

I can work but cannot pay the hundreds in medical bills since I have no insurance. I've been referred to an orthopod. If I have to pay the bill, I can't go.

90. It all depends on your boss.
If he lets it go as worker's comp - then you're possibly okay. Though the claims agent *could* still deny the claim if it's clear that you were done for the day and leaving the premises for purposes other than work-related.

If he refuses - or the claims agent does - then your only other recourse is a liability claim against the owner of the property.

Are you sure you weren't going to the POST OFFICE for your boss? Or going to get some paperwork out of the car?

92. the operative words being
"injured during the course of doing your job" (or anything else work-related) even if it's not necessarily part of your "job description".

Hopefully your boss will let it go but I didn't want you to go into it thinking it was clear sailing. And it *could* be - it just sounds like your boss is an @ss who'll dispute anything that might cost him a dime.

PM me if you want - I think we may be treading over the line on the 'DU advice clause'.

One other thing - get some health insurance. There are decent catastrophic policies out there that don't cost that much. Call a local independent insurance agent. ;) (I am not nor have I ever been an insurance agent. lol)

95. catastrophic could
help ameliorate the costs - depends on the policy - and how severe the injury. But it's too late for that now. I suggest you talk to an independent agent about what your options are. There are policies and there are policies, ya know? Though yeah, you would be better off with a group policy.

She fell on her arm in the car park at work. Broke her radius clean through. She didn't even realise she had done it. Went on and carried on her day. Only went to the hospital when she felt a funny sensation moving her fingers.

I am never going to mess with my mum. :wow:

56. Tell Lelapin if she doesn't take good care of you
I'll put her on the same spanking program that I have Rev-Acts on as of this moment.

85. Done and done.
So far I've shaken my fist at the sky, bellowed oaths at the firmament and conjured demons. I'm hoping to avoid going the burnt offering route, as I only have access to so many virgins.

87. If you haven't seen this
My sister's take on my feeble attempt to join the Ice Capades...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The judges have scored your performance as follows.

For presentation 5.0, 4.9, 4.8, 5.0.

For technical merit 4.0, 3.5, 4.5, 4.0.

Overall the performance was good with an excellent choice of musical accompaniment (Free Falling by Tom Petty and the heart breakers.) Points were clearly deducted for a fall when trying to land the triple toe loop. Triple toe loops will get you every time. Su, if I were you, I'd stick to the SOW COW.

Sorry to hear about your mishap. I hope it's not the hand you write with?

     :loveya:

I'm so, so very sorry to hear this. Hope you are OK and not in too much pain/discomfort and my thoughts, prayers, best wishes and positive vibes for a speedy and comprehensive recovery. I know what it's like to have a key part of your body incapacitated and am quite frankly amazed you are typing as much as you are. Give your arm as much rest as you can -not easy, I know.

Once again  hug:  :loveya: Lizziegrace. Hope everything is OK there

65. Thanks all
I had a rough night but of all the bones to fracture in my arm, this was the best one. It heals in a few weeks and because my elbow could freeze up, it's not put in a cast.

Everyday tasks are a challenge, but that's to be expected.

82. But you know
I was there, I wouldn't have been at work to fall on the ice. Oh well. :(

I'm better today. Still a lot of swelling around my elbow and I can't bring my hand in toward my face at all. But, fractures heal and in a few weeks, it should be much better.

I have had two bonebreaks that I know of: my skull and my toe! I can say I've been fractured from head to toe!

100. You have!
I don't think my skull was fractured but I have a huge knot on the back of my head. I did break a toe and had to have pins 15 years ago. When I was in 5th grade, I broke my collarbone.

I've been busy, haven't I?

;)
