I challenge you to post one line of song lyrics more painful than these
"God damn the sun" (The Swans)

"I wish this grave would open up and swallow me alive" (The Jam)

And now to cheat a bit:

"And I know you'll find a better man
They're all too easy to find
And I'll just go away somewhere and slowly lose my mind" (Magnetic Fields)

"Hear me out, for I was joyful once
Like everyone
Hear me out, I must have changed" (The Dandy Warhols)

1. Here ya go
In this place, it seems like such a shame
Though it all looks different now, I know it's still the same
Everywhere I look, you're all I see
Just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be...

(Something I Can Never Have, NIN)

6. Yes, enormously so.
It's probably the saddest, most depressing song I've ever heard. Very slow, very haunting, it's like a the worst heartbreak ever, set to music.

It's on their "Pretty Hate Machine" album. If you haven't heard it, I highly recommend it. But not if you're feeling suicidal/heartbroken. Not a good idea then. Entire lyrics below:

I still recall the taste of your tears
Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears
My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore
Scraping through my head, 'til I don't want to sleep anymore

You make this all go away
You make this all go away
I'm down to just one thing
And I'm starting to scare myself
You make this all go away
You make this all go away
I just want something
I just want something I can never have

You always were the one to show me how
Back then I couldn't do the things that I can do now
This thing is slowly taking me apart
Grey would be the color, if I had a heart

Come on, tell me
You make this all go away
You make this all go away
I'm down to just one thing
And I'm starting to scare myself
You make this all go away
You make this all go away
I just want something
I just want something I can never have

In this place, it seems like such a shame
Though it all looks different now
I know it's still the same
Everywhere I look, you're all I see
Just a fading fucking reminder of who I used to be

Come on, tell me
You make this all go away
You make this all go away
I'm down to just one thing
And I'm starting to scare myself
You make this all go away
You make it all go away
I just want something
I just want something I can never have
I just want something I can never have...

3. !
Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
Gonna grab some afternoon delight
My motto's always been 'when it's right, it's right'
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night?
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day
And we know the night is always gonna be there any way

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight

Started out this morning feeling so polite
I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite
But you've got some bait a waitin' and I think I might try nibbling
A little afternoon delight
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight

Please be waiting for me, baby, when I come around
We could make a lot of lovin' 'for the sun goes down

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight

Afternoon delight!

22. I'll see your "Wish You Were Here" and raise you "The Final Cut"
The entire album, really...although I'm just going to post selected lyrics from the title track, because that's what I thought of first.

Exhibit A:
"Through the fish-eyed lens of tear-stained eyes,
I can barely define the shape of this moment in time.
And far from flying high in clear blue skies,
I'm spiraling down to the hole in the ground where I hide..."

Exhibit B:
"Thought I ought to bare my naked feelings,
Thought I ought to tear the curtain down;
I held the blade in trembling hands,
Prepared to make it, but
Just then the phone rang...
I never had the nerve to make the final cut."

How's that for painful? :P Roger Waters does angst very well, IMO.

Is it Real? by the Seatbelts

Figurines that fall like leaves then disappear, keep calling
Is it real? Is it real?
Dark machines that wheeze and breathe then mock the air, appalling
What is real? What is real?
This world can really be too much
I can't take another day
I guess that I've just had enough
My mind's slipping far away
I'm falling in and out of touch
Could someone please explain?

25. Here's one
"Not even star-crossed, just unlucky"

(Codeine, "Cigarette Machine")

One of my friends introduced me to this group a while back. Basically, pretty much all of their songs are played very slowly, tend to be pretty heavy, and have dark lyrical content. There isn't a lot of variety to what they did, but if you're feeling down their albums can be comforting in a strange way. Anyway, that particular line of lyrics has to be one of the darkest lines I've ever heard.

30. Battered children almost always grow up to do the same.
~todd snider, here is the song:

You think you know somebody.
You think they know you.
You think you know somebody.
But man you never do.

Jackie used to live three blocks away from me.
We used to throw a baseball and climb his old oak tree.
We would smoke his daddy's cigarettes behind the picket fence.
We swore that we would always be the best of friends.
We would sit on the curb and talk on summer nights,
'Til Jackie's daddy called him, and he took off like a light.

Fridays were all the same our high school senior year.
We hung out by the river and drank Black Label beer.
We listened to the stones with all our old friends.
And sometimes took a toke or two down by the river bend.
I remember I promised Jackie I'd drive him home on Friday night.
He said, "Go on without me. Buddy, I'll be alright."

We went off to college to start our Freshman year.
I went to a school about an hour away from here.
But you know Jackie, He took off, went to college out of state.
He used to call me all the time and tell me it was great.
He said, "I'm coming home for Christmas. I hope you'll do the same."
He said that he would come, but Jackie never came.

When Jackie got married, I was his best man.
He moved back to town. We were neighbors again.
I met a woman. I got married, too.
Our families got together every Sunday afternoon.
His boy and my boy they would talk on summer nights.
'Til Jackie called his boy home, and he took off like a light.

Last night I saw the flashing lights, and I quickly rushed outside.
A neighbor lady told me Jackie's youngest boy had died.
I was shocked to see the police had Jackie handcuffed in the car.
Until this morning's paper told me Jackie'd gone too far.
Now they say Jackie's not the only one to blame.
Battered children almost always grow up to do the same.

32. Not one line, but here's a sad song by The Band
Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 10:52 PM by Oregonian
It Makes No Difference

It makes no diff'rence where I turn
I can't get over you and the flame still burns
It makes no diff'rence, night or day
The shadow never seems to fade away

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door
Now there's no love
As true as the love
That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before

It makes no diff'rence how far I go
Like a scar the hurt will always show
It makes no diff'rence who I meet
They're just a face in the crowd
On a dead-end street
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
'Cause like the gambler says
Read 'em and weep
And the dawn don't rescue me no more

Without your love I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall
Since you've gone it's a losing battle
Stampeding cattle
They rattle the walls

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

Well, I love you so much
It's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before

43. The Unforgiven - Metallica
New blood joins this earth
and quickly he's subdued
through constant pain disgrace
the young boy learns their rules
with time the child draws in
this whipping boy done wrong
deprived of all his thoughts
the young man struggles on and on he's known
a vow unto his own
that never from this day
his will they'll take away

what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never be
never see
won't see what might have been
what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never free
never me
so I dub thee unforgiven

they dedicate their lives
to running all of his
he tries to please them all
this bitter man he is
throughout his life the same
he's battled constantly
this fight he cannot win
a tired man they see no longer cares
the old man then prepares
to die regretfully
that old man here is me

what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never be
never see
won't see what might have been
what I've felt
what I've known
never shined through in what I've shown
never free
never me
so I dub thee unforgiven

you labeled me
I'll label you
so I dub thee unforgiven

44. Again, not a line, but an entire song... Game. Set. MAtch
"Tomorrow, Wendy" - As performed by Concrete Blonde (Music/Lyrics by Andy Prieboy)

It is complete now two ends of time are neatly tied
A one-way street, she's walking to end of the line
And there she meets the faces she keeps in her heart and mind

They say good byetomorrow, wendy, you're going to die
They say good byetomorrow, wendy, you're going to die

Underneath the chilly gray november sky
We can make believe that kennedy is still alive and
We? e shooting for the moon and smiling jackie's driving by and

They say good try tomorrow wendy is going to die
Tomorrow wendy is going to die

I told the priest, don't count on any second coming
God got his ass kicked the first time he came down here slumming!
He had the balls to come, the gall to die and then forgive us!
No, I don't wonder why, I wonder what he thought it would get us?
Hey, hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy is going to die

Hey, hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy is going to cry
Tomorrow wendy is going to cry

Only God says jump
So I set the time
cause if he ever saw it
It was through these eyes of mine!
And if he ever suffered it was me who did his crying

Hey hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy is going to cry
(tomorrow wendy is going to die)
Tomorrow wendy is going to die
(tomorrow wendy is going to cry)
Tomorrow wendy is going to die

Hey, hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy is going to cry

Hey, hey, good bye

46. From Hedwig.and the Angry Inch....what's more painful than this???

My sex change operation got botched
My guardian angel was asleep on the watch
Now all I've got is a... Barbie doll crotch...

I've got an angry inch!

Six inches forward and 5 inches back....

49. The Grave | Don McLean
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 02:48 AM by Heidi
But Eternity knows him, and it knows what we've done.

Full lyrics:
The grave that they dug him had flowers
Gathered from the hillsides in bright summer colors,
And the brown earth bleached white at the edge of his gravestone.
He's gone.
When the wars of our nation did beckon,
A man barely twenty did answer the calling.
Proud of the trust that he placed in our nation,
He's gone,
But Eternity knows him, and it knows what we've done.

And the rain fell like pearls on the leaves of the flowers
Leaving brown, muddy clay where the earth had been dry.
And deep in the trench he waited for hours,
As he held to his rifle and prayed not to die.
But the silence of night was shattered by fire
As guns and grenades blasted sharp through the air.
And one after another his comrades were slaughtered.
In morgue of Marines, alone standing there.
He crouched ever lower, ever lower with fear.
They can't let me die! The can't let me die here!
I'll cover myself with the mud and the earth.
I'll cover myself! I know I'm not brave!
The earth! the earth! the earth is my grave.

The grave that they dug him had flowers
Gathered from the hillsides in bright summer colors,
And the brown earth bleached white at the edge of his gravestone.
He's gone.

57. That's a good one. Here's another Don McLean haunting lyric.
and when no hope was left in sight on that starry
starry night.
You took your life
as lovers often do;
But I could have told you
Vincent
this world was never
meant for one
as beautiful as you

55. I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour, but heaven knows I'm miserable now.
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?

Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?

What she asked of me at the end of the day
Caligula would have blushed

"You've been in the house too long" she said
And I (naturally) fled

In my life
Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye ?

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now

"You've been in the house too long" she said
And I (naturally) fled

In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die ?

59. This will win every time
Yeah...I like it when the girls stop by.. In the summer
Do you remember, Do you remember?
...when we met..That summer??

New Kids On The block, had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick.
And I think it's fly when girls stop by for the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch,
I'd take her if I had one wish,
But she's been gone since that summer..
Since that summer

Hip Hop Marmalade spic And span,
Met you one summer and it all began
You're the best girl that I ever did see,
The great Larry Bird Jersey 33
When you take a sip you buzz like a hornet
Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets
Call me Willy Whistle cause I can't speak baby
Something in your eyes went and drove me crazy
Now I can't forget you and it makes me mad,
Left one day and never came back
Stayed all summer then went back home,
Macauly Culkin wasn't Home Alone
Fell deep in love, but now we ain't speaking
Michael J Fox was Alex P Keaton
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

New Kids On The block, had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick.
And I think it's fly when girls stop by for the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch,
I'd take her if I had one wish,
But she's been gone since that summer..
Since that summer

Cherry Pez,cold crush,rock star boogie
Used to hate school so I had to play hookie,
Always been hip to the B-boY Style
Known to act wild and make girls smile,
Love New Edition and the Candy Girl
Remind me of you because you rock my world
You come from Georgia where the peaches grow
They drink lemonade and speak real slow
You love hip hop and rock n roll
Dad took off when you were 4 years old
There was a good man named Paul Revere
I feel much better baby when you're near
You love fun dip and cherry Coke,
I like the way you laugh when I tell a joke
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

In the summertime girls got it going on,
Shake and wiggle to a hip hop song
Summertime girls are the kind I like,
I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike

Bugaloo shrimp and pogo sticks
My mind takes me back there oh so quick
Let you off the hook like my man Mr. Limpet
Think about that summer and I bug, cause I miss it
Like the color purple, macaroni and cheese,
Ruby red slippers and a bunch of trees
Call you up but whats the use
I like Kevin Bacon,but I hate Footloose
Came in the door I said it before,I think I'm over you
but I'm really not sure
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

In the summer girls come and summer girls go
Some are worth while and some are so so,
Summer girls come and summer girls go
Some are worth while and some are so so,
Summertime girls got it going on
Shake and wiggle to a hip hop song
Summertime girls are the kind I like
I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike

60. The whole song is one big depression ...
In a little while from now
If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it’s like when you’re shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that’s tough
She's stood him up"
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to well wouldn’t do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much, as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God and His mercy
Or if He really does exist
Why did He desert me in my hour of need
I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts
broken in the world that can’t be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

Alone again, naturally
Now looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn’t understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

66. Good old depressing Patsy Cline had few sad ones.
I fall to pieces
Each time I see you again
I fall to pieces
How can I be just your friend

You want me to act like weve never kissed
You want me to forget, pretend weve never met
And Ive tried and Ive tried but I havent yet
You walk by, and I fall to pieces

I fall to pieces
Each time someone speaks your name
I fall to pieces
Time only adds to the flame

You tell me to find someone else to love
Someone wholl love me, too, the way you used to do
But each time I go out with someone new
You walk by and I fall to pieces

(I fall to pieces)
Each time someone speaks your name
(I fall to pieces)
Time only adds to the flame

You tell me to find someone else to love

But each time I go out with someone new
You walk by and I fall to pieces

72. Just a Couple from John Prine.......
From Sam Stone:

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost its fun
And there was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on the G. I. Bill
For a flag draped casket on a local heroes' hill.

Souvenirs
© John Prine & Steve Goodman

All the snow has turned to water
Christmas days have come and gone
Broken toys and faded colors
Are all that's left to linger on
I hate graveyards and old pawn shops
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they rob me
Of my childhood souvenirs

Chorus:
Memories they can't be boughten
They can't be won at carnivals for free
Well it took me years
To get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me

Broken hearts and dirty windows
Make life difficult to see
That's why last night and this mornin'
Always look the same to me

I hate reading old love letters
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they rob me
Of my sweetheart's souvenirs

(Repeat chorus)
