Pierced my left ear lobe in 1965. Haven't worn an ear ring in more than 35 years.

48. I remember them, one of friends broke his nose.
These toys are now legendary. They started finding their way into the schoolyards in the early seventies and in 1971 were yanked from shelves because kids were suffering eye injuries when the fragile, glass-like balls were shattering from the violence of contact with their mates. I believe a plastic version may have been released after the original and the more menacing version was pulled, but I don't think that it enjoyed the same popularity. One of the main obstacles in locating this toy today is knowing what to call it. There were supposedly over 80 copy-cat products on the market during Clackers hey-day. During your search expect to see names like: Bonkers
Clackers
Clack Clacks
Click Clacks
Crackers
K-Nokkers
Ker- Knockers
Klackers
Klick Klacks
Knockers
Mini Poppers
Moon Rocks
Popper Knockers
Rockers
Super Clackers
Quick Klacks
Quick Clacks
Quick Wacks
Wackers
Whackers
Whak KOs
Because of the abrupt halt in production and distribution there were truckloads of these toys dumped on the secondary market. This is good for collectors today because it means that there are lots of these toys out there still MIP selling in the $10-$20 range.

38. I made and sold enamel work in Berkeley....
I remember Laurel Burch's work, but I think she was beyond being a street artist at that point.

Do you remember the street woman who always wore, what looked like a painted, yellow beret? She walked around selling booklets of her poems. And I think she was part of the People's Park Mural. (We're talking about a zillion years ago. I don't know if the mural is still there, or the street artists.)

39. These are the Berkeley characters from my time that I remember offhand:
Bubble Lady, Rick Starr (lounge "singer"), Scott the Piano Man on Sproul Plaza *sigh*, the goat-and-pig-walking lady, the red-ribbon-against-apartheid dude, the raggedy transvestite guy. (This was mid-80s.) I was there just before the Naked Guy. Unfortunately, I heard he died recently. :(

40. I remember a (the?) Raggedy Transvesite Guy....
(this was late '70's). He had dark hair and a beard. He wore cute little dresses, usually short and white and would drag a toy around on a string while saying, "I'm not supposed to wear a dress because I'M A BOY!"

And there was The Computer Guy, who walked around chanting numerical equations. In retrospect, I wonder if he was autistic or had Asperger's Syndrome.

Having a stand on the Avenue, gave me a great chance to observe people. And I was almost more connected to "the crazies" than the customers.

It certainly was a colorful place and time! :hi:

45. My parents bought me only one Transformer.
Being totally clueless, they got me the one that turns into a radio/cassette player. I mean...WTF? Some marketing genius thought that it would really rock to have a robot that could, at the first sign of danger, reconfigure itself into a conduit for old Perry Como tapes? What fucking use is that?

Needless to say, that toy got very little play.

12. Our Old LP's...
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 06:20 PM by Bzzzz
My hubby still has all of our old LP's from the 60's and 70's in the attic. There must be 400 or 500 up there and still in the original orange crates. Does anyone remember using those to keep your LP's in?

52. Yes, I still have hundreds of LP's,
and keep them in orange crates, in the basement. My old stereo (Pioneer receiver, Technics turntable, and Aiwa cassette deck) set up on boards and cement blocks, is down there collecting dust, along with the speakers the size of filing cabinets (also Aiwa). One of these days I should see if it still works.

19. When we bought our house there was this antique player piano left behind.
It needs to be restrung and the keys need to be redone. But it's a pretty awesome looking old saloon style stand-up.

There it sits like a big decorative box next to the liquor cabinet.

that's attached to the neck of the bottle so you can't lose the cap. I bought it for a camping trip in 1975. Still use it - it's in my frig. right now. It also still has its "Made in Austria" label affixed to the bottom. Fine product - 32 years old.

A Powerbilt Super Citation, 240cc with a graphite shaft. I got it specially built with precise specs and swing weight and it was all the rage when I debuted it on the course. Now it would look like a 4 wood.

But what the hell, I may break it out for a round or two. Still love the feel and the workability and I don't get as much benefit from the titanium as I should.
