the snow is pouring down but lightning and thunder just hit...
literally about 30 seconds ago...i have spent 98% of my life in wisconsin and i don't have any memory of anything like this...we're supposed to get 10 inches tonight, 4 or 5 are probably already here and there was just a massive flash of lightning and some low thunder rumbling...

has anyone else ever experienced this...?

2. Really?
It's so damned quiet here. Not a flake, not a sound.
In fact, it's so warm, I turned my heat down to 65.

3. Thundersnow...
I've heard more and more reports of it happening over the last few years. It used to be very rare but not so much anymore.

4. Yeah, I've experienced it here in the PNW and BC.
Kinda rare, but it happens.

Googling...

It takes strong vertical motions inside the storm to produce lightning. It usually occurs in summer thunderstorms when the atmosphere is more unstable. However, some snowstorms are strong enough to produce brief upward motion strong enough to produce lightning and thunder. When it thunders in a snowstorm be prepared for a period of very heavy snow!

10. Thundersnow is very rare. I laughed my ass off one time when
I was watching the Weather Channel, and Jim Cantore (back when he had hair) was reporting from (I think) MA on the big snowstorm at the time. Right in the middle of his live broadcast, there was a simultaneous lightning strike and huge thunderclap. He shrieked, and I thought he was gonna crap his pants.  Oh, well...

11. We'll get it when the lake snow squalls are intense
I just experienced it about three weeks ago when we got ourselves caught in an intense snow band coming home from shopping.

13. Had it in Toronto
back when we had that storm where we got 4 feet of snow in 2 days, the City had to call in the Army to dig us out, and the rest of the country laughed at us.

I thought it was pretty cool. It was snowing like a total madman, so when the lightning flashed, it really lit up the night.

15. We've had two snowstorms and one ice/snow storm since December
here in Oklahoma City, and we've had thunder during each one of them. I don't ever remember that before, and I've lived here my entire almost 50 years. Some lightning, too.

Enjoy your storm--we've had 70-degree temps most of the week, a rainstorm last night, and this morning it's crisp and clear, 56 degrees, and I have the windows open.

Once in Germany and once two years ago in NC. Really fascinating when that happens. I love it.
