Healing vibes, please, for my thread-eating kitty
We brought him to the vet Thursday because he was vomiting, not eating, and hiding in a closet.

Turns out he ate a bunch of thread (I've pulled dental floss out of his mouth before, he seems to love to scarf string) and it cut up and "scalloped" his intestines.

Surgery went well, but he's still at the vet's, has started to eat but now has a fever and there's some concern he may have peritonitis. Hopefully, since they're on top of this, it won't be life-threatening, but it's scary. (Later I'll worry about the huge credit card bill.)

Cat-lovers heed-- Keep your kitty away from thread, floss and all sorts of string-- it could kill them!

1. Oh no!
You bet...Sending good thoughts that 1, your kitty is soon home where he belongs and good as new! And 2, this has cured him of the habit. How scary!

2. Thanks, MrsG!
We're not relying on him putting two and two together, though-- my husband is cleaning and purging the entire house, getting rid of junk, every place where a stray piece of string or tinsel might hide.

My bedroom has never been so uncluttered-- it's a true pleasure to walk in there! :)

3. I don't know why they do this
We used to have one that used to love to try to get ahold of my dental floss when I was flossing...I really had to watch her. I think it's called an intussuception (sp?) when the intestines fold over on each other. My bird once got dental floss wrapped around his leg and after I freaked out and tried frantically to untie it, he flew up on a shelf and untied it himself. It could have been a tragedy if it had gotten tight enough to cut off his circulation. It's scary what harm these little items can do. I'm glad to hear your kitty came through surgery okay, though.

5. I think he has an oral fixation
He used to be quite fat and we kept dry food around all the time so he could feed at will. Then he got a urinary tract infection and we were told to put him on watered-down wet food, so he only gets fed twice a day and he gets ravenous.

After we changed his diet he started with the thread thing. Also chewing up paperback book covers, and biting the hose to my husband's sleep apnea machine.

8. You've got them
I stopped putting tinsel on a tree (along with popcorn strands) because I had a cat who loved string.

9. "thread eating kitty"
I thought this was a new variant of a "thread-killer". lol

Sorry to hear about your kitty. I hope he gets better soon.

You might want to have his thyroid checked . . . AND - we have a dry food for our cat who also suffers from urinary tract issues - it costs more (way more) but he can still self-feed.

11. Thank you, saracat and everybody !
When we brought him in the vet said 3 more days and he would have been a goner. Peritonitis would have been too far gone. When he mentioned that word again today I got scared again-- but I hope they can avert it getting bad.

13. Awwww.
My brother had a cat that used to do that.

He had surgery, and came through just fine. They learned to put all the thread and string out of his reach.

Poor kitty. I hope he is okay.

14. I hope he's OK.

That is really scary.
My two kitties love strings, ribbons and the like.

Now I'm going to watch them and keep strings and threads away from them.
Fat ribbons they can still play with I hope.

Good thoughts and vibes are going out to your kitty.

Thanks for the warning.

15. a franciscan prayer for your beloved companion...
Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.

19. sending good vibes your way . . .
hope your kitty has a speedy recovery.

One of my cats has a fixation for string too. Once, when he was a kitten, Manilla ate A LOT of yarn. Thankfully, he threw it up and was fine, but it scared the crap out of me.

21. Get well wishes and healing vibes
I hope your kitty recovers quickly and is home with you asap. My dog ate a Q-tip about a month ago. We had to rush her to the vet with the same symptoms as your kitty. She is now 100% healed.
