NASCAR fans please explain the
attraction to watching cars go 'round and 'round a track at high speeds....From my perspective NASCAR fans are as obsessed with NASCAR as Deadheads are with the Grateful Dead.

1. Well
I like NASCAR but I'm not of the "deadhead" variety. Any sport's fun is in the eye of the beholder. I'm attracted to the speed, to the strategy, there very idea of 180mph 3 inches from the other cars gets me excited. But then my dad is a complete car nut so that's probably why it rubbed off on me........ I think BBall is boring. What is the whoopdido of running back and forth tossing a ball into a hoop? Of course no one in my family was into BBall either.........

2. I'm all about the noise...
Sitting close to the track and feeling those cars as they get close and then pass you. There is nothing quite like it. It's amazing.

Disclaimer: I have only been to dirt track stock car races and none recently...I don't think things would be that different between the two though. I could be wrong. I dunno. Would like to attend an actual NASCAR race one of these days, but it will have to be after graduation. I have no time right now. LOL.

4. I've been to three NASCAR races at Vegas.
For the last two, we were three rows up from the track. WOW! You would love it!

10. nothing quite like it is right...
although it's just the opposite for me....one time at the Wisconsin state fair, they had an indy-style car race, and i went up to the chain link fence by the track, and the sound, heat, and smell all combined to give me the worst headache of my then young life.

auto-racing just doesn't do it for me...why not just go down to the Dan Ryan every day and set up lawn chairs...? same difference.

3. It's just like any other sport: there are a lot of things to watch.
It's pit strategy, type of track, car set-up, etc. I love it; I think it's partly because my parents and several of my uncles raced in the local stock car races for years, so I grew up with it.

Of course, like anything, some people are going to like it, some will come to like it, and some never will.

I have a question for you: Why are you lumping all NASCAR fans together? I love racing, but I'm not obsessed with it. And, NASCAR fans are as varied as fans of other things.

8. Maybe not all NASCAR fans are obsessed as
I was with the Dead but quite a few are, you must say. Not everyone who likes the Dead are obsessed (heck I'm pretty mild when it comes to the Dead..in that I don't know when they first played Dark Star but I did plan my vacations around them when Jerry Garcia was alive).

I don't consider it a bad thing to really be into whatever you like, just as many don't understand being a Deadhead, so I don't understand the NASCAR pheonomenon. There is no insult meant in my question.

9. Thanks, ikojo.
And I agree -- there are many NASCAR fans who are obsessed, but much as I love racing, I'm not going to plan my whole life around it. I'm with you on that one -- I'm a fan but I really don't understand that level of obsession over anything.

:hi:

12. NASCAR? Meh?

Wake me up when at least half the races in the season are run on road courses.

Hell, bring back dirt tracks!
