Man, some people are real jackasses
I drove over to a friend's house to get some work done because my internet is down from the snowstorms around here. I parked on the street in a residential neighborhood in a driving snowstorm and apparently accidentally parked in front of a driveway that was obscured by all the snow. My friend stepped out for a moment and called me to say that her neighbor was asking if anyone knew whose car this was. I had been there for about an hour, I'd say.

So I went out right away to move it, and started to apologize to him for the accidental parking and he starts screaming the most vile venom at me about what an asshole I was and how he had called a tow truck. I really have never been called so many unrepeatable names. I was so taken aback that I really didn't have much to say and I just moved the car.

I mean, I understand why he was annoyed and all, but he wasn't trying to use his driveway and I obviously didn't do it on purpose (there's a lot of snow on the ground) and was completely apologetic. Am I missing something here?

1. You're not missing anything. That guy is missing any sense of
human kindness.

You called it right -- he's a real jackass!

3. His putrid life is its own punishment I'm sure.
That's what I always think when I encounter inexplicable assholes.

Sorry that happened.

Your explanation is probably right on the money.

4. I once almost got fired because of someone parking in front of my driveway

But even then I would still never hurl profanity at someone--some people are like that, though.

7. Yeah, I understand the irritation
though as you say, it doesn't really explain the invective

6. You haven't missed anything -- some people are real jackasses
and I have no idea why.

Maybe the guy has a shitty life.
Maybe he drinks.
Maybe he just likes abusing people.

In any event, he's an asshole -- but it's his problem, not yours. Don't give him another thought.

8. Not that I defend the venom but maybe it was the last straw
I have spent the last five years trying to get people not to park in front of my driveway. If they aren't blocking it, then they are too close to the curb cut (sometimes jutting out beyond it). I miss the city wide leaf pickup, my trash was often not picked up (they need three feet of clearance on either side for the automatic arm to grab the container), I don't get snow plowed to the curb so I have to shovel about eight feet of the street, and I've been late for work because of cars blocking me in. And it's obvious that there is a driveway there.

I finally got the city to put up signs on either side of the drive, telling parkers not to park beyond the signs but many still do. I have to be ever-vigilant or I can't see when I'm pulling out of the driveway. And this goes on year-round. I have left notes that don't help (the same cars come back) so, yes, I call tow trucks now.

Maybe you were one of many who made the mistake that day. Or maybe he was afraid he wouldn't get plowed out. As I say, I don't defend the venom; I am always reasonable and polite to these offenders (until they are nasty to me) but I do understand the frustration.

10. Yup, you're right.
the important thing to remember here is: his reaction is about HIM, not you.

He must be having a really shitty day...or a shitty life.

Who knows what's going on, but that was pretty mean of him to go off on you like that.

Shake it off and send him Compassion, if you can.

What goes around, comes around....
