Olivier's WORST roll?
"49th Parallel"

He plays a French Canadian trapper in a 1941 war propaganda film about nazis landing in Canada.
On TCM now.
Pee-Yew.

1. I'm going to say his worst roll was a kaiser roll...
or maybe a sesame roll.

As for his worse role, I can't say I've seen many of his movies, but I do know his preference for baked goods.

11. Absolutely

"Inchon" is quite possibly the worst movie ever made, and nothing can excuse Olivier's participation in it. There really are some things you do not do for money--and this was one of them...

4. Not even close...ever see a movie called "The Betsy"?
Typical Harold Robbins tripe. And Laurence Olivier is in it. Ugh.

5. You really mustn't forget The Jazz Singer.
The image of L.O. clapping along to "Coming to America" is something that still makes me squirm.

7. Wasn't he in "The Betsy?"
I heard that he was pretty stink-a-fied in that.

Heck, Clash of the Titans wasn't high art, either, but I guess that his performance was entertaining, at least.

12. In the last ten or fifteen years of his life he did a lot of "rubbish" just for the paycheck
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 06:16 PM by WI_DEM
he was getting old, in frail health and wanted to leave some money for his family. The stage doesn't pay all that well and so he began doing some films for the paychecks of up to a million dollars just so some films could get his name and prestige. So he did films like "The Betsy", "The Jazz Singer", "Inchon", "Jigsaw Man" and "Wild Geese II."

13. Remember when he did a Polaroid camera commercial? You are correct,
he knew he was dying and wanted to leave his family well off (and his children by Joan Plowright were still somewhat young). Before that, he had put much of his money into starting the National Theater in Britain.
