WTF is it that runs in the background on my computer
and slows it down every Wednesday night starting at 10 p.m. for about 20 minutes? :wtf:

OS is Windows XP Home, if anybody's got a clue.

2. Look in your Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del)
Anti-virus scan? Or spyware scan?

7. Could be a number of things.
Antivirus, system cleanup, automatic updates, disk defrag. Check your system scheduler to see what's set to run at that time.

14. Check the processes tab in Task Monitor...
...when the machine slows down. Check what process is sucking up all your CPU cycles.

11. start with the task monitor
that's the old three fingered salute control + alt + delete.
If the inturder is obvious, click upon it and "end task".
Even if you couldn't find it got to tucows.com or download.com.
get yourself a copy of Spybot search and Destroy and one of Ad Aware.
they're both free!
Install and run them both. Fix any problems they find, then re connect to the internet.
Download updates for both programs and run them both again.

13. That, darlin'
is because it's the hamster's bath night. You really should at least hibernate for those few minutes so they can have their privacy.

15. Maybe your machine has been infected with a virus
... and turned into a mail-bot. At night, it could be sending out spam e-mails.

17. Here are a couple of handy free tools to try
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/processmonitor.mspx

(yeah, I know it says microsoft, but that's because M$ recently acquired System Internals. Some pretty cool utility programs for keeping an eye on things behind the curtain.
