I say Primer 55. "Introduction to Mayhem" was damn good, but "The New Release" sucked a dead hobo's balls.

1. I liked Norah Jones's Come Away With Me, but..
Feels like Home bored me. The more artistic she gets IMO, the less her voice seems suited for the material.

I can think of lots of opposites - better second albums.

7. I somewhat like Boston's debut, but I agree..
that their second turned bombastic. The debut's "More Than A Feeling" influenced the song "He's Enough Reason" by Hope 7, so the song gets points for that. I can't agree with the Led Zeppelin comment below, though.

DJ Shadow's "The Outsider," particularly considering how great "Entroducing..." and "The Private Press" were.

9. Live...
Their first album (mental jewelry) in like '91 was THE album for me and all my friends....and though they've become more recognized...I just couldn't dig anything they've released since then.

And I mean...nothing...since that first album.

38. I agree 100% about Live and Mental Jewelry although a lot of people have told me
they prefer Throwing Copper. Either way, I can't listen to anything else they have done either. Didn't they have some major personnel changes?

20. The Elvis Brothers...
One of the "skinny leather tie" bands to get signed in the wake of the Knack, their first album "Adventure Time" was just tremendous. Even had a minor MTV hit (Fire in the City). Guessing some record company exec decided to mess with their look (think 3 male Cindi Laupers), their sound, and apparently they used up most of their good songs on the first album, as the second record is really pretty dreadful with the exception of one or two cuts.

Nevertheless, I saw them live a couple times and they were phenomenal, both musically and the rapport with the audience. I should dig that record out today...

Not sure if the album I'm talking about was their first album.

"Cracked Rear View", which was a huge commerical hit, I thought was a good album.

Their next one, can't think of the name although I owe it, sucked.

33. I'm going to geek-out here, but only because I'm a TF fan.
They had a couple of albums on Matador, so Bandwagonesque was actually their third album. You are right about the album that came after though. It was called Thirteen and it was not good. They recovered nicely though and put out a couple of good albums after it.

28. The Stone Roses and Pearl Jam are the first two that come to mind
Second Coming...ugh...literally, only one good song on that album (Love Spreads).

And I always though Pearl Jam's follow-up to Ten was nearly unlistenable.

What's the aphorism about debuts vs. followups? "You spend the first 25 years of your life making your first album...and then you have to churn out the second one in 18 months" or something to that effect.
