Sometimes it's best not to ask...
There's a great sushi place we love. A few weeks ago they added something called the "Nebuta Roll" to the menu. We tried it and loved it - we get it all the time.

The menu lists it as hamachi, tempura shrimp, basil and tempura flakes. It's rolled up with the rice outside, topped with unagi sauce and a dollop of chili paste. Nummy!

Finally, tonight we asked the waiter - "by the way, what ARE 'tempura flakes'?"

Answer: crap that gets fished out of the deep fryer. He didn't say it that way, of course, but it's whatever falls off other fried stuff.

I shouldn't have asked. Won't stop me from eating the roll though - it's awesome.
