Formerly half-ton man can leave house at last

AN NICOLAS DE LOS GARZA, Mexico (AP) -- A man who once weighed well over half a ton left his house for the first time in five years Wednesday -- wheeled outside on his bed to greet neighbors and see a mariachi band.

"The sky is beautiful and blue, and what I want is to enjoy the sun," said Manuel Uribe, who had once been certified by doctors as weighing 1,235 pounds.

Though still unable to leave his bed, Uribe has lost 395 pounds since he began a high-protein diet a year ago. He now weighs about 840 pounds.

To celebrate the milestone, six people pushed Uribe's wheel-equipped iron bed out to the street as a mariachi band played and a crowd gathered. Then, a forklift lifted him onto a truck and the 41-year-old rode through the streets of San Nicolas de los Garza, a Monterrey suburb.

1. Wow. Puts things in perspective, that's for sure.
I'm glad he's dropping the weight, but dang, he's got a looooong way to go still. At least he's trying.

3. Wow, well at least he's making progress. I hope he's getting some help dealing
with the reasons why he let himself get that bad. There must be some underlying disorder.

Sure puts the 85 more pounds I need to lose in perspective (I've already lost 60). If he can do it, I sure as hell can.

6. I wish him more success
I feel very bad for him.

I wonder if it's an underlying metabolic disorder, or the disease where one can't stop eating?

7. I feel bad for him
I've never understood how the human body get to that weight. It just doesn't seem possible. Like our skeleton would just break or something. I dunno.

11. There has to be someting genetic going on there.
I just can't see how anyone's body would let one eat so much to get that big. I wish him well.

15. I can't imagine how someone could get that out of control...
I would think as soon as it became physically HARD to get out of bed, you'd take a good look at where it was going and change your ways...
