I don't commonly listen to Weird Al, but on one of the XM comedy stations one of his songs came up and I caught the first couple of phrases before I switched it. It was about him going to some chick's pizza party in jr high and she sent him home with extra pizza.

Cute story. I'm a music journalist, and one of my biggest pet peeves is when I'm asked to judge a battle of the bands. I hate those things for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that it flips around the proper order of things, forcing bands to pay the club owners for the honor of playing. That's bullshit. Anyway, this nonprofit group that helps musicians and artists was having a talent contest, and they asked my paper to send a judge. I refused. The paper's publisher said that I would, in fact, be attending. I demanded a game of rocks, papers, scissors with the editor, who was the former music columnist, to see which of us would go. I lost, I went. I walked into the place, saw this gorgeous blonde in a slinky black dress and asked where I could find the lady that was running the show. "You found her," she answered. That was Aug. 6, 2004. We're getting married this November.

I've tried to explain to her about the timing but she doesn't seem to get it so sometimes now I just let the machine get it. I feel bad about that but...

2. How did you meet your SO? In a case of mistaken identity; we each thought the other was someone we were supposed to meet at a club. I was doing a radio promotion, he was playing in the band. I thought he was my sound guy, he thought I was the club manager. And I was a total b-tch to him which he denies to this day.

not usually. Most phone calls for me are under a minute or two, unless it's an old friend out of town. I don't even answer my cell phone sometimes, especially when I am talking to someone. Luckily my minutes roll over. I probably have several thousand saved up.

for the most part. I am pretty honest with people and fiercely loyal to my friends and loved ones. I can be an ass sometimes, but try not to overdo it. I generally don't hold grudges, and when I get pissy I try to understand it and get over it. A small handful of people have seen me actually REALLY pissed off, but it's rare. I also abhor violence as a sign of "moranitude," but enjoy mock violence sometimes between consenting adults and know how to fight: I will also defend myself and friends when necessary, but most things can be defused without resorting to that.

I have my faults, but I try to be honest about them and work on them if they get in the way of life. Obviously I am a bit long winded.

If there are areas in which you judge yourself harshly, at least you know yourself and know your flaws. That, in itself, makes you better than many people. I'm sure you'll only improve over time.

Not really. I have a few friends that I have long phone conversations with, but that's because I'd have equally long conversations with them if we were together.

Yes. It has its frustrations, but the rewards more than make up for them.

Define boss. My department chairman is a great guy and I like him very much. My dean is also a nice guy but while his job performance has an impact on me, I don't interact with him very much. Beyond the dean of the college, I have even fewer direct interactions with the hierarchy of administration, so while they're technically my "bosses," I never really work with them in any direct ways.

I do. I'm not perfect, and god knows I've made some serious mistakes that have hurt other folks, but never maliciously or intentionally. I think I'm a good person.

1. I HATE talking on the phone. My wife knows that, and she still calls me when she leaves work and talks all the way home. She KNOWS I hate talking on the phone. Just last night, I called my mother to wish her a happy birthday, and after about ten minutes, told her: "Well, gotta go..." On her birthday! I hate talking on the phone.

2. We were both doing a play for community theater. I fell in love with her at first sight, but she was married. Finished the play and went our separate ways. Eight months later, I run in to her at the mall; almost the first words out of her mouth were: "I got divorced." I said: "Ree-ee-eeally? Heh-heh-heh." The rest is history. B-)

I couldn't do my job without email. Two phone calls in a day are enough to ruin the whole day. I can barely deal with the weekly phone call from Mom, for Pete's sake -- sometimes a whole hour!

2. She was a crewmate on the first manned mission to Mars in 2037. After a few weeks cooped up in that little tin can, I started to notice how nicely she filled out her spacesuit... :P

3. Now that I've been promoted, yes. If only it were not located on the wrong side of the tracks (the tracks literally used to run through what is now our back parking lot): my commutes run longer than they did in NYC, even from Jersey City, plus I have to brown-bag lunch, just like in high school.

4. I am one of only a handful of people in the state who can answer Yes. In fact, I just passed on some paperbacks to her. Everyone else seems to be afraid of her. But remember, I had a boss in NYC once!

Longer answers:

1. The older I get, the less I enjoy talking on the phone. In fact, I'm starting to loathe it except for quick conversations with my husband.

2. I was a freshman, he was a sophomore. My high-school friend and his high-school friend were roommates on the same floor as I was. We all hung out in their room and romance blossomed from there. We're still friends with his high-school friend, the one who officially introduced us. Gosh, that was almost 19 years ago. Eek!

3. The stories I could tell abou this job. Oy vey.

4. ...I wrote a long diatribe here but I think it's best that I don't post it... Suffice it to say that all three of my bosses act like the rest of us have no reason to be unhappy, that we should just love being belittled and used by them. They do not understand the difference between "low morale" and "bad attitude" and just assume we all have bad attitudes.

5. I hope to be a better person, but I'm not bad. Sometimes, I meet people who are so good, so inspiring, so dedicated, and so positive that I feel like scum compared to them. But then, on the other hand, I see Ann Coulter and think "Wow, my brand of human has certainly evolved way beyond that pond scum!"

He wears suits and ties; I prefer jammy pants and band tees.
