Sad news, my little prince had to be put to sleep

My mom called me today to tell me that my baby boy, Romulus, had to be put to sleep on Saturday. She wasn't sure when to tell me, knowing that the last time we had to put one of our cats down I was unable to concentrate or function normally for a couple days. But she didn't want me to find out when I got home tomorrow for break. I must admit, it was something I'd been expecting a little. It seems he was older than the humane society originally thought he was when we adopted him. After a bath last year I noticed how skinny he'd gotten despite how much he ate. It seems that he was no longer absorbing nutrients from the food he ate. On top of that, his kidneys were starting to go. We tried our best, putting him on a special diet, giving him medicine in his food everyday, bringing him to the vet for regular injections... but he just kept wasting away. Eventually he reached the point where it'd be cruel to keep him alive.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then a nice lukewarm bath with gentle milk shampoo.

Wear an old t-shirt and nothing else while doing it, you're going to get as wet as the cat :)

I had to have one of my cats put to sleep on Valentine's Day. Now, every once in a while, I'll think I see him out of the corner of my eye, or I'll hear a thump or a crackle and I'll think "That's the ghost of Amos" It sounds silly, but it makes me feel better. I hope you get a little "ghostie", too.

One of our cats is also named Romulus. At least, that's what he was named when we picked him up from the shelter. Now we just call him Fluffytail.

No doubt, he had a brother named Remus?

Originally, his name was Rommel when we adopted him. However, my family is Jewish, so we didn't think that'd be the best name for a cat. I'm a mythology lover, so I chose a name that was close enough.

Romulus was a handsome boy and I'm sure he was a very good companion. I'm an animal lover (I have two cats of my own), and although death is an eventuality for all living creatures, it always breaks my heart to hear of someone's pet passing on. My heart goes out to you. All the best.
