Is there a song that makes you cry no matter how many times you listen to it?

Everytime I hear "There Goes My Life" by Kenny Chesney I always cry.:cry:

Willie Nelson, gets me everytime.

I do cry at movies.. Music, no.

Something about love interrupted by death gets to me. (Sorry if that's a spoiler for people who haven't heard those songs)

think about the lyrics without getting a big lump in my throat and trying to sing it will always bring tears to my eyes.

passage "In the clearing stands a boxer.." was used beside a picture of our class president, a serious, intellectual kid who challenged the school administration on issues he was passionate about like being able to have an anti-Vietnam War rally on campus.

He was killed in a traffic accident at age 23, and I always think of him and the tragedy of his life cut short when I hear that song.

This song got me through so much. It still speaks to me, 20 years after I heard it for the first time. It brings me back to the deaths of my childhood friend, my grandpa and my dad. It brings me back to the first girl I shared this song with. It brings me back to my room in college when I thought I was in bigger trouble than I thought, but not as bad as I now know it was. It brings me back to my wedding. It brings me back to the birth of my child. One day, ti will bring me back to today, thinking and typing this with my eyes welling up with tears.

I like the first Leonard Cohen, the second Leonard Cohen, the Jeff Buckley version, which is a fusion of the 2, not so much and the kd lang version is great. The second Cohen version, from Cohen Live has made me cry, not every time, but often enough.

Another Queen song, "The Show Must Go On," is also heartbreaking.

It's hard to even think of it.

Lelapin used to sob when that song came on the radio and she was little - 2 or 3 years old. It always makes her cry and now that she's grown up, I miss the little girl and cry too.

As I've researched our family for my book, and think about songs for a possible family reunion, I've rediscovered this one.

Our family has always been very musical, and we had several bandsmen and ladies, along with a full family band. It has new meaning for me now.

I understand. Lelapin's father is a musician and a conductor. She can't listen to it without crying because she knows it *will* be played at his funeral.

My dad passed two years ago - we hadn't spoken in 20 years. However, after his death, my two sisters and I were able to track down our half-sisters (children of his second marriage) through the information included in his obituary. We hadn't seen each other since we were kids. We now email each other regularly, share pics of our kids, etc.

So something good finally did come out of it.

It's a rare recording of the "Lacrimosa" from Mozart's Requiem that doesn't leave me bawling.

To bad they had to cheapen it by putting it in that dumb Nike ad.

I sang the Mozart Requiem at summer music camp in high school and it is indeed powerful.

The Albinoni Adagio, though it gets played too much. Like in The Doors movie.

The Samuel Barber Adagio for Strings, though it gets played too much. It started life as a movement of a string quartet.

I have a fabulous choral album called AGNUS DEI music of Inner Harmony, which is classical orchestral stuff arranged for acapella choir. It's on the Erato label. The Barber Adagio was turned into an Agnus Dei which is the first cut on the album.

Also, the Nimrod variation of the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, done on this CD as a Lux Aeterna. When they get to the climax they sing "Requiem Aeternam" (eternal rest). This really gets me, because I had that cut played at my father's funeral in 2000 in a little Methodist church in East Texas. I was proud of sneaking in some Latin to a Methodist church!! I wanted to play the Allegri Miserere but it was too long. Oh well.

Second verse of this story: I saw the Tallis Scholars (famous British choral group) perform a few years later. There was a reception at the church afterwards and I met some of the people. They are quite heavenly sounding, as you may know. I was speaking to one of the ladies in the group, told her about the Nimrod variation as a Lux Aeterna played at my father's funeral. She was familiar with the CD.

And you know what she said? "You did right well with that, young lady."

That really comforted me--that a member of one of the world's greatest choral groups would say that to me in that understated British way.
It did my heart good.
