why do you like what you like?

things like the almost default worship of johnny cash by most 20-somethings come to mind here.

I grew up listening to him. My father was in a bluegrass band before I was born and until country became horrible bland pop in the early 90s, that was what I listenened to. I was singing the Ballad of Ira Hayes in elementary school.

And I voted that I like stuff because I really do like it.

there are a lot of things I like that I was into before they were "cool" - from wearing non-baseball hats to riding a scooter to music styles/bands to just being a dork. On the other hand, I consider myself not only open-minded but devoid enough of pop-culture infection that I don't really care if I start liking something late if it's worth liking. I don't have cable and the only radio I hear anymore is NPR, so when I stumble across a fad, sometimes I am not even aware of it.

It can be frustrating to be on the front of the curve though. For instance, I have liked ska & reggae music since I was a kid, including it's offshoots like the Clash and The Police. As a form of music, it has literally been around almost as long as rock and roll has. Then it got big (and crappy) then went away again a few years ago, and everyone made fun of me even though I had liked it for a long time.

I generally don't care, although sometimes it gets old.

As for JC, well, I grew up listening to him, the Stones, and the Beatles (Dads favs). Most of the Punk etc stuff I was real into as a kid I heard by stealing my brothers tapes etc, so I was ahead of my age groups curve on that one (also, Johnny Cash has always been big in the punk/goth/rockabilly scenes, so I heard him from that end too). I don't watch much MTV/VH1 (I am addicted to celebreality, though, just ask me how I feel about Chyna Doll getting kicked of by that $*&@!$@# Kennedy) and I never listen to the radio, so sometimes I'll be all "OMG, I just heard this new band and I really like them" and most of my friends will say "DUH! They've only been around for like 2 years, don't you listen to the radio?".

There wasn't really a point to this post, I'm feeling very ADD today, I stayed up late watching a movie and am sleepy today.
