1. It's sad when bands who are good in one style decide to "expand" and become shit in another.

14. Oh Yes.
Same thing with C.O.C., Cro-Mags, Suicidal Tendencies, Rollins, Butthole Surfers and lots of others. Thrash metal was IMO a direct evolution of hardcore punk.

18. Fair Enough And A Funny DRI Concert Story.
I saw DRI back in the 90's with (I think) Nasty Savage and Sick Of It All. About half-way through the DRI set I decided to do some stage diving. I waited for the right moment, climbed up on stage, moshed around for a bit then off I went. It was perfect and I was pumped for another go. Again, I waited for the right moment jumped up on stage and off I went. Only this time, the pit had opened up much closer to the stage and there were only about 4 rows of people to catch the stage divers. I cleared those rows except for my feet which the people in the back row tried to catch me by. Instead of catching me though they flipped me so I was perpendicular to the floor and I did a header straight into the concrete. My friends thought it was the greatest thing they'd ever seen and I think I have brain damage from it to this day. Oh, and I never did another stage dive after that.

Good times

Jay

12. The main difference seems to be
they got down with the click track!

My roommate does post-production sound design, plus some producing and he tears his out day after day trying to salvage stuff that is hopelessly out of time because none of the musicians ever learned to play to a metronome or click track.

Either way, these guys don't look like they got into music solely to get laid--which in my mind has always been the main ingredient in hair metal.

13. My big thing
is if they're good. And as metal, I didn't think they were good. They didn't seem innovative even, aside from maybe the fact that the singer stays out of the high reaches of his vocal range.

15. Yeah, they defintiely changed
and it seems rare for punk to become metal--they just seem more Biohazard than Poison is all.

I never developed a strong affinity for any of the three styles of music--so I'm just commenting in a detached sort of way. My favorite band when I was in Junior High/high school was Judas Priest--an dthey put out one no doubt about it hairspray metal album, Turbo, which other than havng some really sweet thythym guiatr tones was pretty forgettable.

I usually went fo the mid 70s epic metal nine minute song stuff before I branched out into jam bands and folk. Lately I've been doin' a little nostalgia listening though! (don't tell anybody--please!) I mention this just so you know where I'm coming from.

16. "Crossover" Was Hugely Innovative.
And I can understand why you don't care for "Beneath the Wheel". I never liked it either. "Abduction", from the same album, however was killer.

24. I could be biased
because I prefer their early stuff. I didn't find it that innovative, but as so often is the case, it's something that's hard to prove/define as it's so personal.

9. I'll admit
that I've never really heard D.R.I.--in any of their guises--before this, but I don't hear any hair metal in any of those tunes. Seems more thrash a la Anthrax to me. They grew their hair out, but didn't reach for the Aqua Net stuck with denim instead of spandex and stayed away from those sickly sweet harmonies which make the young girls swoon.

that had the video for Beneath the Wheel? All it's missing is a high pitched voice somewhere.

21. Crossover ruled the planet.
I went through two tapes of that in the 80s. I look at it as Dealing With It, only the songs were longer.

Maybe that's why they named it 'crossover'

20. I saw that recently, and I hated "Thrash Zone".
Four of a Kind even had it's moments. Thrash Zone was just a massive disappointment. I was so immersed in Acid Reign, Ludichrist, D.B.C., Septic Death, etc, that one of my heroes changing (and in the early 90s, a lot more followed) to expand their audience bummed all of us out. They were too heavy for the Poison heads, and too light for us speed freaks. Ain't broke, don't fix it.

What I'M pissed off about the whole underground thrash scene in general is that out of all of those great bands, a meatheaded bunch of former glam-rockers with the biggest redneck tard of a frontman in metal history were the ones that emerged as the fan favorite, killing all of the others.

26. Aw Dude, Anselmo Wasn't A Bad Guy.
He just had a really bad back. In all seriousness though the Abbot brothers seemed like genuinely cool people. It was Anselmo and Brown who were the redneck arseholes. I never got the whole Pantera craze and how new they were supposed sound. Sure I liked a few of their songs but their sound wasn't much different than anything off of "Among the Living" or "Master Of Puppets/...And Justice For All". Totally derivative.

27. Pantera = Dumbed-down Exhorder.
When you think about it, Anselmo was probably more the worst thing to happen to that band than the best thing. I often wonder what Dimebag and Vinnie could have written had they not dumbed their sound down to cater to needlemaniac "Metal is one big fuckin' FISTFIGHT! YEAH!" Phil and their hothead Clint Bruno fanbase. It was from the more psychotic of that bunch that Nathan Gale was shat from.

Looking at later interviews with Darrell and Vinnie, I think I misjudged them because all I saw was that fuck and his "let's give more fuel to the angry white rednecks" lyrics and persona. You could only put up with an asshole like Phil for so long before it's time to just leave.

29. I like 'em anyways, but even at their best they were just good.
Even at their punky best they couldn't hold a candle to DK or Crass (though to be fair, few bands could).

They were a lot of fun live though. My best friend still has neck trouble from seeing DRI and Kreator back to back nights in '86,and I left the second show needing stitches over my eye.

Ahhhh,great days!
