My Brother turns 18 today and I am scared for him!
With people talking about the draft. My brother is a little slow and he has trouble stepping on bugs, yet he still fits their requierments to be drafted! I am just so scared what might happen!

1. He'll be fine
I don't think the draft will happen, too many wouldn't stand for it.

11. Not To Be A Wet Blanket
But when you say "too many wouldn't stand for it", just who are you
referring to.

The down side is that the sheep believe almost eberything that comes out of the Bush White House, and the media just loves him to no end.

Those who would be against the draft, would just like now not be heard
because they have no power and the media will just report that they
are malcontents and unpatriotic.

Those like O'Reilly and Hannity along with the rest of their FOX cronies would be singing praises about how it's every American males
duty to report to their nearest induction center, and people would
buy it!!!

I applied for a position on the draft board in my area, and was sworn in, all I'm waiting for now is the classes that I have to attend so that I know what the requirements are. And for those that may not know it yet, there are not going to be any exemptions for school. If
you are in college at the time you will be allowed to finish your current degree, upon graduation you report for duty.

So like I've already asked who will stand against the draft if it should come back?

12. I have more faith in the USA public than you
That's not meant to start a flame or as an insult. As soon as people realize their son's and daughters will be drafted, there will be massive opposition.

5. Check out this website
http://www.duckdaotsu.org/resist.html

I have a son who's sixteen, will turn 17 in March, and I fear for him also.

What too many people don't realize is that we're already living in a police state, as witness the security alert stuff which has never been below yellow since they started, and what you go through to get on an airplane these days. Or the police coming to the house just because you want to purchase a flight simulator program. Kind of like the proverbial frog in a pot that's being brought to a boil, too many people are going along with the increase in government intervention in their lives. I'm concerned that too many of us (not counting those here on DU) won't understand what's really going on until it's too late.

6. I'm sorry for your brother
They'll call it "compulsory national service" but it will effectively be a draft.

7. I think a draft is unlikely.
The political climate in the USA is such that starting a draft would be a heap of trouble for whoever advocated it. He should be more worried about getting a good education and a good career.

10. Some Democrats want the draft
NY's beloved senator Chuck Schumer wants it as a way to get rich kids in the military and to force the president and Congress to have really good reason to go to war.

I wouldn't worry though. The political backlash will be so bad they won't actually do it.

13. I don't think you should worry-
But if you can't help but worry, maybe you should sneak in to his bedroom when he is asleep and cut off all of the toes on one foot. That will make him 4-F and he cannot go in to combat.

Of course it will only aggravate the problem that you described as him being slow and having trouble stepping on bugs. No toes on one foot will probably make him even slower and he will find it even harder to step on bugs.

16. Do you live anywhere near the Canadian border?
I'd be looking northward if talk starts up about a draft.

21. There will not be a draft anywhere in the next 10 years.
The shallow support for the war would plummet to 10% if any suggestion was seriously considered. no one is going to go near it.

15. The Slow and Poorly-coordinated ones Come Home in Boxes
Not everyone can be turned into a soldier in two months.
That is one of the problems with a draft.

19. I am totally against the draft but...
You can't tell me when you see some punk-ass lippy 18 year old snoop dog wanna be trying to be a badass by breakin' in to cars and stuff. You don't think, "What this prick needs is two years of being yelled at."

I think that and it always makes me laugh.

20. I'll say a prayer for your brother, LF. I've got a nineteen-year old
stepson that we had a hard time convincing not to volunteer for the military. He stayed out, but I don't want him drafted for Baby Bush's Boondoggle. He's naive enough to believe that if Bush does it, it must be good for the country. (That's his freeper dad talking).

He's in my prayers, Lady.
