1. set a triggering device to set off a 12 gauge shotgun
whenever someone pulls the mat.

2. hmmm, too bloody
I admit - for a minute I thought of starting a doormat war with my neighbors and stealing theirs, but I can't do it.

6. A communiqué
from the Doormat Liberation Front:

The DLF is proud to announce the liberation of another doormat. It has been released into its natural habitat, where it can die young and decay like nature intends.

This is to serve notice on all who would enslave matted straw pads for their own pleasure: You are not safe. Your doormats, your showermats - ALL your mat-like things - will one day be free. Gaia bless.

'Twas a glorious day.

8. String, sleighbells (or other bell or whatever). Instructions:
1. Tie string (thicker string) to underside of doormat, not to the edge
2. Attack string to bell
3. Close door, with string running under door. Usually there's enough room for someting like string to move freely

Person pulls on doormat, doormat is attached to string, string pulls bell or anything else you've got set and it should let you know when the person's taking it.

It's likely they pick it up and walk away with it very quickly so as not to be seen. This should provide enough of a quick jerk to activate whatever warning device you have.

P.S. If you come out one morning and the mat is gone AND the string is cut: Move away immediately. Your antagonist is likely ex-special forces. :o

11. that would be stolen immediately
maybe I can do the tie-a-bell-to-a-string experiment with that one and set an aluminum bat next to the door.
