Is it ok to be a fan, or have a crush on someone even if they are a repuke?

I posted earlier about enjoying Gene Simmon's show, and I was unaware of his political leanings.

That got me thinking, is it ok to be a fan of or have a huge crush on someone regardless of their political stance? I'm a Georgia Bulldog and I was told that it is sacreligious (sp) to date or mate with a Florida Gator. I dated a Gator for a while and I totally dug her, regardless of her football loyalties.

Also, does anyone else have any crushes that might be or are republicant? Would it matter to you if the hottest girl or guy is really a political enemy?

Could you or would you put aside your scruples to date someone?

It's nice to see that Angelina Jolie is an ambassador for the UN human rights, but even if she were a rw'er, I'd still get excited every time I see her. And Scarlett Johansson could be the president of the NRA and I'd still lust after her (under the premise of changing her mind)

not right now, in this climate. In the Clinton era things were a lot fuzzier for me. Now with the war and hurricane Katrina and 9/11 and all that the lines are drawn and I couldn't do it.

But I think they can be enjoyed at other things.I'd watch an actor,or even listen to Kiss,regardless of their politics,unless they start actively taking a stand in the political arena.Then I'll treat them like the other Repukes.

I don't think I could date one, though. It would be a constant battle, and I've had enough battles in my time.

One of the first issues I covered with women I met on an online dating site was their political alliance. If they were bush supporters I politely told them that I didn't think we had enough in common to meet for a date or correspond any further. A couple women got pretty pissed at me about that and sent me hate mail! (Which only tells me that I was smart to avoid them in the first place.)

In all seriousness, when it comes to being a fan, I don't pay that much attention to a celebrity's political leanings. What someone does on screen or stage is their job, and I'm quite willing to separate that from their personal lives.

Lust? Same thing. If someone's hot, it just means they've got a million dollar cover for a 10 cent interior. Nice to look (or drool) at, but I wouldn't think anything serious.

Crush? Different. If someone holds a viewpoint I find reprehensible, then I'm not going to get a crush on her.

We were engaged, but then she ended up dumping me by telephone after 7 years. My girlfriend before that was a Republican, but a more moderate one (she sided with President Clinton during the whole impeachment thing). I do hope that my next relationship is with a very liberal Democrat, though!

I would not stop enjoying an actor or performer simply because of his or her political leanings. However, it makes me happy when I find out that a performer has liberal views! One time there was a very attractive model or actress on a political show (I don't remember who, it was quite a few years ago) and she was talking about how it was wrong to discriminate against overweight people. She was already a gorgeous woman, but hearing her say that made her 3 times sexier to me!

I don't think there is anything wrong with being a fan of or having a crush on an entertainer who differs politically from you. Like RFK, Jr. said, 80% of Republicans are Democrats who just don’t know what is going on. We can’t blame people for being ignorant even if they are talented actors or musicians. Luckily, there aren’t too many talented actors or musicians that align themselves with the repukes. Too bad we can't say the same for athletes.

I'm personally a fan of Vincent Gallo, despite his political leanings. I'm quite capable of separating the politics from the artist/person/whatever.

Trust me on this one.

It just seems that most of them are so foreign to my general philosophy. I might be able to function with a Repuke that voted for Gore and Kerry over Bush, but that's a big if. Finding someone is hard anyway, and chances of me finding a Repuke like that being Mrs. Right would be very small. My biggest celeb crushes, here, are all Democrats or unknowns:

It is one of the better tv shows on tv right now, and it has been locked in a life and death battle for ratings.

But even without her character on the show, the interviews of just actual Kristen Bell she seems pretty nice and down to earth.

I don't watch much TV, so I could certainly fit it in. Yes, personality is a big part of my crushes.

He apparently supported Bush only because of his stance on national defense. That was back in 2000.

Simmons is more of an arch-capitalist, who thinks about little else besides making a buck. His girlfriend and kids mock him ceaselessly about how he values the almighty dollar more than them. He usually agrees.

I must confess to enjoying "Family Jewels" too. Simmons is such a relentless breadhead, with one crazy idea after another, yet his kids seem like the adults by comparison. The family is an odd, yet strangely sweet, little group.

She spends half her time complaining that Gene works too hard and the rest spending money as fast as she can. I don't think she's quite worked out where the money comes from yet.

The kids seem normal by comparison. Neither of them seem particularly into blowing cash and living large. The most the daughter seems to want is for Gene to come to her father/daughter volleyball game or turn up at the school careers day (which he never manages to do).

giving absolutely no thought to the welfare of an animal living at a mansion in Beverly Hills - then when Gene did the logical thing and had it picked up, the girl pouted only long enough for him to promise her no-talent ass a recording session - gawd, it was pitiful - Mr. Simmons cannot attend his daugter's school functions because he is too busy trying to get his has-been face on a f***ing snowboards - OMG, I find it so disturbing tha people find this kind of disfucntionality entertaining :puke:

Who wants to watch normal people going about their daily lives? Get up, eat breakfast, go to work, come home, cook dinner, watch TV, go to bed: not the stuff of high ratings, I think. Most of the great dramas have been about disfunctionality and, while I wouldn't call Family Jewels great drama, it is minorly diverting to see such people's idea of a "normal life."

I agree the whole horse incident was typical spoiled brat stupidity, especially since they only bought the horse to "get back" at Gene for missing the volleyball game. Mistreating an animal as a prank is never acceptable behavior.

A really funny and intelligent kid. He makes that show, I think.

A Kennedy. Now how she handles it, I don't know but they seem to have a successful marriage.

my dad graduated from North Carolina State University, and my mom from the University of North Carolina @ Chapel Hill. This year will be their 25th wedding anniversary - we jokingly attribute their marital stability to the fact that neither one really watches sports religiously. :P

That said, I tend to find Republicanism a turn-off - I once dated (well, kind of dated, it was never exactly offical - more a week-long fling in NYC, but that's beside the point) a really nice, fun, good-looking guy who was a Repub. We had fun together, but it wasn't meant to last in the long run, I don't think. (The fact that I was an 18-year-old college freshman and he was a grad student at a completely different school in a different state may have had something to do with that, as well.) But yeah, in general I go for the Democratic men. ;)

If I see a hot woman then I am going to be attracted physically to her. But I have found that if I start to know their politics and they are rw then they suddenly begin to look a lot less hot. Without knowing Coulter's politics I might find her fairly attractive but knowing her I see all kinds of ugly physical features now.

If I am lusting from a distance I won't even think politics.

If it is a relationship you can forget it: no way. I wouldn't be able to deal every day with facing such stupidity. I am 48 and have wasted a lot of years with people whose ideas I find reprehensible. No more.

certainly a much better program than AI as it teaches kids to actually BE musicians and focuses on talent and skill. A money grubbing whore Simmons may be but we was a good mentor and really conveyed how brutally hard the music business is and strived to bring out the best in his apprentices. Plus it was amusing watching the kids give shit in return to Gene.

It was neat seeing him pull these kids out of their shells and some of them really seemed to blossom under his tutelege. Plus, I mean, it's Gene Simmons, from KISS!!

I like Family Jewels too, mostly just for the odd little interactions the family has that are a lot like my family. Shannon's sister is a hoot, I just about pissed myself when she dragged Nick to the drugstore with her. Nick seems to be a really smart down to earth kid with a pretty sharp sense of humor.

Who gives a damn about political stance, if you enjoy their work (assuming they're an entertainer).

And if a relationship works even with political/sports allegience, then it doesn't really matter.

Unless they're a Michigan fan. That's just too far.
