Something along the lines of a salmon or whale totem. Any ideas?

2. No, pretty much 100% German.

3. Ah. Perhaps something German, then?
Or from a culture you have lived with and in?

Not that I don't think they're beautiful - I find Tlingit art amazing, and I have a gorgeous whale rider painting I bought in Alaska...

but to tattoo sacred images that are not of one's heritage, whether original or adopted? That makes me feel kinda funny.

But if you go ahead and do it, they'll look cool.

5. I was stationed in Washington State
went to school out there, my Dad's from there, and I lived in Seattle for a bunch of years. I am an avid fly fisherman...and my crowning achievement was catching (and releasing) an 18-pound Chinook salmon on the fly in Sooke, British Columbia. Wearing mask and snorkel, I've climbed into creeks with spawning salmon to see what the hell they were doing. I've helped destroy native American fishing nets on the Nisqually river to save one of the last Chum salmon runs.

I guess I kinda feel connected to salmon and salmonids.

7. 18 pounds - sweet!!
Some day in my life I'd like to catch a fish bigger than a perch.

Of course, I'd have to go fishing more than once every 15 years, but, you know, that's how it goes. :-)

Those nets you destroyed - was it at the request of the owners? Or a form of civil disobedience to save the salmon runs? I'm curious on that one - whatever it was, kudos to you for it - but I am curious.

Salmon are cool fish. I loved watching them in Alaska, swimming in little shallow creeks with their backs exposed, because the water level was so low. Amazing creatures.

8. Definitely civil disobedience.

The Nisqually Indians would string "set nets" across the Nisqually (starting from the I-5 overpass and continuing upriver) and effectively cut off access to the redds in Muck Creek, etc. We would float bales of hay down the river to rip up the nets and then collect them along the shore. The nets, once set, were never watched by the Indians, so it was pretty easy to yank them out and get rid of them.

9. No shit! You were right in my neighborhood...
Small world... here's a friend of mine with one of his big catches right under the I-5 bridge. (For what it's worth, not sure how long ago you were here, but the Nisqually Tribe is, overall, much, much more responsible about their fishing now - probably in no small part thanks to your efforts and the eforts of people like you...thank you)

10. Beautiful fish. The Nisqually also has a healthy sea-run cutthroat trout
population. I've caught many of those cutts right on the bank where you're standing. Damn, I miss that place.

6. Normally I'd agree with you...what with all the assholes and the chinese characters
But as long as you're aware of the cultural significance and have experience/knowledge of the design (which can't be said of most people), I love stuff like that.

I really like them both. I prefer the one on top. This is a much better idea than hanzi, that's for sure.
