What's the most surprising thing that you ever got in the mail?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Plus, my mail's bo-ring so I have to live vicariously through others.

1. A 1940s or 50s Christmas themed half apron, gorgeous, in pristine condition.
It was surprising because I'd never seen it before nor ordered it.

It was sent to me as a complete surprise by an online friend who knew about my apron collection and thought it would be perfect for me. She was right.

I've gotten a few surprise cookbooks that way too, but the apron surprised me the most. I actually cried happy tears.

Heeeee...they'd have to scrape me off the driveway if anyone ever sent me something like that.

5. A camera
Edited on Tue Mar-27-07 11:24 PM by MonkeyFunk
true story:

My father was raised by his aunt and uncle. His aunt, my Nanny, was a grandmother to me.
She and her husband, my Poppy, came to see us every Christmas. I'd never had a christmas without them, until I was 9, and we were all waiting for them to show up on December 23rd.

Then we got a phone call from Poppy - He got home from work and found Nanny dead.

So we drove the 200 miles to their place for her funeral. We didn't have a Christmas that year.

We got home, and in the mailbox was a package for me. It was a camera from Nanny. She "bought" it with Bazooka bubblegum wrappers and probably $2.

To this day, I don't know why she had it sent to me instead of bringing it with her. But, being a kid at the time, I thought it was a miracle.

34. I had an aunt we called "Nanny"
My older sister started calling her that for reasons unknown to me, though the aunt's real name was Marian. We called her husband Haysie, because his name was John Hayes Lastname. They were childless and very good to us.

44. Well, the condoms and lube surprised me at least.
One of my friends used to go to a site where you could build up points towards big packets for sex products. He did it so much that it eventually became the main source he and his girlfriend used for rubbers. One summer when I was still in college he and his girlfriend broke up. Knowing that I still had a girlfriend, he finished up the points towards the 80 pack and had them sent to me.

Like I said before, good times.

42. And another thing...bar exam results!
I had passed one exam earlier in the year...but fell in love, and wanted to stay where I was, the whole gushy thing! So I studied! And as it happens, I'm in one of the top five states with most difficult bar exam to pass. The earlier exam was only 2 days, but this one was three days. During the exam, they tell us the results will be mailed on 09-26, and do not call the bar headquarters before then. On 09-24, I get an envelope from bar headquarters, but it's opened and empty. I chase down my mailman, crying and pleading with him to go through every mailbox he has delivered to that day...he says "no can do." I call the bar headquarters, they chastise me about calling, and then admit the mis-mailed some envelopes out early...but nobody should surmise anything from it (none of my friends got one).

On 09-26, my friends are calling me, exultant, b/c they've passed. Because my mail was usually delivered late, I spent the day out at the state park with my dog. I got home past mail delivery time, no results! I call my boyfriend and his best friend who happens to be an attorney, and they collude about how to get me through the rest of the weekend. Boyfriend (who is now my husband) says he's on his way over with major liquor supplies.

In the meantime, while I'm crying about having to wait 2 more days...my next door neighbor knocks on my door...says the mailman left an envelope with her...he knew it was VERY important to me...could she make sure I got it? Well, she fell asleep, took a long nap, forgot all about it...blah, blah...

I grabbed the envelope out of her hands, ripped it open...and yes, I passed!

I was waiting out on the door stoop for my BF...I can't continue on, or this thread will get locked!

48. It wasn't the most surprising, but it sure was welcome.
My RN State Board results, scores and license.

I was at work and everyone knew that the most recent batch of results had been mailed. Some of the new grads had already gotten theirs and everyone was talking about it at the hospital.

I got off work at 3:00pm and had chest pains the entire 30 mile drive home. I drove straight to the post office and there was a note in my mailbox telling me that I had an envelope that wouldn't fit in my box. I went to the counter and Jenny, the Postmistress, (very small town) had seen me pull up and had the envelope waiting. My heart was pounding and I was relieved when the envelope wouldn't bend: If the envelop didn't bend, it meant that they had enclosed your license enclosed in heavy cardboard to prevent damage. I ripped open the envelope and started screaming! I had passed and was a full-fledged RN!The chest pains stopped that very second! LOL!
