Learning how to merge!

I thought Minnesotans were really bad at it until I got out here.

1. Missouri drivers should get 2 hours of
how to turn off your turn signal.

2. You think that's bad? Don't EVER drive in Northern CA.
Specifically, the north bay area around Santa Rosa. My GOD what a bunch of idiots--it's not uncommon to see a five-mile backup because there's a discarded sock on the side of the road.

This is how bad it was: I was actually glad to be back in LA's traffic when I moved back here. :7

13. I SO do not miss the traffic up there.
LA's got congestion enough to make you insane, but at least you're not surrounded by complete idiots all the time.

I actually kind of miss metro DC's traffic--again, lots of congestion, but everybody's in a hurry to get where they're going, and you'd better know what you're doing if you don't want to be run over. That's admirable, in a way. I've long said that the regional motto should be "Die Before Yielding." ;-)

3. I second that!
I have noticed that the on-ramps and off-ramps in Minneapolis are spaced really close to each other.

5. Sounds like parts of Minnesota
Today I was on the freeway here in SoCal. I am in the far right lane and there is an entrance ramp. No biggie. This person on the entrance ramp, whose car was well ahead of mine, did not speed up to prepare to merge. I ended up having to hit my brakes and slow down about 20 MPH in order to let the car in. Had I not slowed down, I just knew that the person would have probably cut in such that I would have had to SLAM on my brakes to avoid a collision.

7. Because of my husband's defensive driving training before he went to Iraq
He would have not done anything like that. My knuckles are very white while riding with him now that he's back.

6. Merge? What's that?
Edited on Wed Mar-28-07 02:53 PM by Hong Kong Cavalier
I think it's called "GettheheckoutofmywayI'mgoingtoforcemywayontothehighwaybecauseYOUneedtoYIELDformebecause
I'mmoreimportantthanyouareandmycellphoneisringingsoI'mgoingtoansweritnowandGETOUTOFMYWAYbecauseIwannago20MPHfasterthaneveryoneelse
whileItalkonmycellphonewithmyheadtiltedtotherightbecausemyphonecallisSOimportant."

And this is just in some parts of Minnesota. Other parts, it means go really slow down the entire on-ramp and drive onto the freeway at 35mph.

9. It doesn't help that California has some stupid ramps
The one I get off on to go to work is one of those that has an on-ramp then the off-ramp just past it. So you've got cars trying to get on the freeway and cars trying to get off at the same place. Wouldn't it have made more sense to put the off-ramp FIRST?

I've driven all over the US, KitchenWitch and the drivers in California are the worst I've ever seen. Love the people, hate their driving.

12. oh yes!
I hate how people don't know how to merge in Cincinnati. Come on, people, it's not rocket surgery. You speed up on the ramp. If you're going faster than I am and in front of me, go ahead and continue in front of me even though I have the right of way. Conversely, if you're on the highway and someone tries to merge going 40, don't stop for them please.

stationed at every on-ramp to a highway. If some jerk tries to cut in, his vehicle would be destroyed and it and any other vehicles involved in the resulting mess would be quickly pushed off the road and traffic could resume.

No doubt that in the beginning this would result in the loss of many innocent lives, but in a month or so I think we'd see much more order and courtesy displayed by merging traffic. :)
