A sincere and open apology for my use of the word "girl"
After a conversation with a person who i highly respect I have come to realize that even though i mean "Girl"
in an endearing way when i use it that it doesn't negate the fact that it is a belittlement when referring to a grown woman.
I actually was caught using it twice in a conversation.
And was called on it.
And I needed to be.
It is a bad habit and I am doing my best to stop it.
My Sincere apologies to anyone i may have offended.
You were right and i was wrong.
I am an old dog..And I am going to try my best to learn a new trick.

Thats all carry on

11. I think in many instances
"girl" or "boy" is perfectly fine. In general, I think it's friendlier than the sometimes impersonal sounding "man" or "woman".

If I'm dealing with strangers and want to be real careful, I'll use the latter terms.

12. Yeah boy...
as long as you use girl and boy and not girl and man, are consistent, then you are at least being intellectually honest in your verbage.

However, having been to school with feminists who would scoff and get mad if I were to hold a door for them, I can tell you that you are better off changing your ways old dog. :P

Women and men= adults
boys and girls= children

at what age? age of majority is the rule of thumb i try to follow, a boy is a boy until he's 18 and then he's a man. a girl is a girl until she is 18 and a woman.

16. Oh hell, I use it all the time.
To Miz t.
It's somebody's birthday and they're taking her out to lunch.
"So...where are the girls going for lunch?"

And she'll say to me "You boys going fishing Friday?"

I think we get to 'tetchy' sometimes.

It is one of those words that requires context.

You are one of the good guys from what I see here at DU

25. I call women "girls" and if I'm called a girl I don't consider it
disrespectful or belittling.

It's going to become more and more difficult accommodating everybody's individually perceived insults. *sigh*

26. It's good to take notice and try to change it around women you don't know.
If someone I didn't know at all or only knew casually, referred to me as a "girl", I'd be offended. If it's a close friend, totally a different story.

Unless it's like "You go, girl!!"

28. Well, that was nice of you but, in my mind at least, not really necessary
I'm not really offended when people call me girl, but I suppose it's all about the context and the familiarity in which it is used. For example, I call my girlfriends "girl" all the time....as in, "Girl, long time no see!"

I see it as endearing term, like you said.

However, I can understand how some might be offended by it. That's just not my reality.

 Good on ya, though, for trying to be more sensitive. :hi:
