Wanna talk about drive-in movies?
We did drive-in eateries:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=6357516&mesg_id=6357516

Fond memories.
The Drive-In.
AKA The Passion Pit.

I remember picking up a date and making small talk with her dad while I waited for her. (Girls were NEVER ready when you came to pick them up. It was part of the game. They had to make an 'entrance' or something)
"Where you kids going tonight?"
"The movie."
"Drive-in or walk-in?"
"Uh...the drive-in."
Cold stare.
Silence.
Squirm.

I'm glad there were no drive-ins in our area when my daughter was dating.

Once I forgot to take the speaker off my window and drove off.
The speaker wire broke.
I turned the speaker in at the ticket booth on the way out.
Then they attached them to the pole with steel cable.
Rip your window out.

I remember the food at the concession stand was pretty good.
A car full of popcorn smell is a good thing.

My uncle had a part interest in a drive-in and told me that the snow cones were the most profitable thing they sold.
The total cost was about 2 cents and they sold for 15.
The most expensive 'ingredient' was the paper cone.
A penny.

They had 'Dollar Nights'. Instead of charging by the person, it was a buck for the carload. We'd jam 8 or 9 kids in and fill the trunk with lawn chairs.

Once we turned the headlights off and drove IN the Exit and nobody noticed.
Free movie.

If the 'make-out' got so heavy all your windows fogged up a security guard (Passion Police) would knock on your window and yell "OK, EVERYBODY UP! I WANNA SEE HEADS!"

So...ever been to a drive-in?

As far as I know, they never had them here since I've been alive (I'm 36).

2. I think they still exist in a few places.
But most of them are now strip malls.
A lot were located on major thoroughfares, a 'little' out of town.
That's all prime location real estate now.

3. Oh yes! We used to go all the time when we were kids.
I loved the little amusement parks they had that you could go to for free before the movie. And the ones with the sawdust pits where you could dig for "treasure" were the best. I honestly don't think I ever found anything though.

When the previews came on and the preview was in the least bit racy or violent, my parents would make us turn our backs away from the screen so we couldn't see it. Of course, we always tried to peek. I remember one that had a woman in a black and red negligee who, I think, was being murdered. I felt so wicked because I sneeked a peek when I wasn't supposed to. Interesting that I should remember that 45 years later, isn't it?

I was introduced to Sidney Poitier movies at the drive in - my parents took us to every one of his movies when we were kids and I still love him. If the movie was a kiddie movie, such as Mary Poppins, we'd be handed lawn chairs and get to set them up in front of the car.

Wonder what the parents were doing while we watched the movie??? Hmmmm??!!??

;-)

10. My first time getting drunk was at a drive-in.
Now gone and replaced by a Wal-Mart, but in the mid-1980's, Kerrville, TX had a drive-in theater. When I was 15, I got DRUNK with some of the guys from work (a summer camp) while we watched Spring Break. :D

When I was a kid, we'd get into my uncle's mid-1960's Ford Station Wagon and watch the movie on a blanket on the hood of the car.

11. Our drive-in used to have a "dusk til' dawn" event on Memorial Day and Labor Day Sundays
where they would show four movies instead of the usual two. Since High School graduation was normally on Memorial Day Sunday, the party at the drive-in on that night was always immense. The powers-that-be didn't try to fight it--they just kept a cop or two stationed on the highway outside the drive-in, and anyone who left before dawn was likely to get stopped, especially if they looked young. Inside the drive-in, though, was anything goes, with all manner of alcohol (or other substances) at your disposal.

Since the kids who had gone away to college were usually out of school by then, it was one of the best opportunities to reunite with old friends that you hadn't seen since they graduated or since you graduated. Good times.

I haven't been back to that town in a while, but I think that drive-in might be gone :(

In Oklahoma City they had a pretty cool drive in called the Winchester Drive-in, and as far as I know it's still there (it was two years ago when I moved from Oklahoma). They have this huge neon cowboy sign that waves people into the drive-in. I suppose it used to be on the edge of town, but now it's in the middle of developed land, just about five blocks from a spur of the Interstate. They showed three movies for five bucks a person--usually one second-run family-ish movie, a first-run feature, and another second-run feature for the late-night crowd. You could bring your own refreshments--you could even bring your grill, and throw some burgers on while you grab another beer from the cooler. I imagine there were the same kind of car-hopping hijinks I engaged in as a youth, but other than a few bottles on the grounds, the occasional sniff of weed, and the obligatory fogged windows, it was never really noticeable to me as an outsider.

Good times. I miss the drive in. They have one about 45 minutes away from where I live now, but I haven't been yet ...

21. I have a deep and abiding love for the drive-in,
though I missed out on the classic double-feature era of low-brow monster 'n' sexstrvaganzas. But I pulled off the classic "sneak the friends in by the trunk line" gambit, and managed a few dusk-'til-dawn festivals. The movies were things like "Krull" and "Spacehunter: Adventures In the Forbidden Zone."

I too used to be taken there in my PJs with my parents hauling a big butter-stained paper bag full of popcorn rather than opting for the expensive concession cuisine. I remember playing at a welf little playground they had beside the screen as "Concorde: Airport '79" started up.

24. things seemed so much simpler then
people were more frugal, more relaxed, everything wasn't about what you bought, or what you had.

At times it seems like life now is obsessed with consumption and how much money can be spent. :(

30. Best drive-in on the planet
It is the weekend family destination spot, and draw thousands of patrons. They have two screens, a pizza parlor, an old fashion diner, putt putt golf, inflatables, a birthday party room, a stage, chicken barbecues on weekends, a playground, and an ice cream parlor. The business employs 80-100 teenagers a night -- my daughter is one of them. We have a summer cottage about a 1/2 mile away so we walk up there just about every Friday and Saturday night to get a pizza and ice cream.

33. I loved the drive in!
My parents used to take us -- that was the only way I saw movies through most of my early childhood. Lots of Disney -- Apple Dumpling Gang, Herbie, One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing.

In high school it was the summer Friday event of choice. A couple of friends with pickups would take loads of us in. Lots of beer, lots of popcorn, very little recollection of what we saw.

One of my first real dates was taking a friend and two girls to a drive in. Got a speeding ticket on the way there. :-( But we popped the hatchback, kicked back with some blankets and had a good time all the same.

Maybe my favorite memory of drive ins happened when my family moved in the late '70s. We were in Denver from California and needed to stay in a motel for about a month while my folks house-shopped. Our motel room was on the back of the complex, facing a drive-in screen. If there were enough cars, we could hear the audio while the movie played. Even without the audio, we'd all gather in the motel bedroom and watch the screen every night. It was Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise in "The End." I must have seen that film 20 times, half with sound, half without.

34. I miss them, too.
Lots of great memories.

As an aside, there was a drive-in near the Pittsburgh airport that showed "adult" films. Sometimes you could get a glimpse of what was showing if you were taxiing on the right runway. I'm amazed that Allegheny Airlines didn't charge extra for that.

36. Klute!
We went all the time, and my parents were able to get me to sleep in the backseat (sometimes we went to see child-appropriate stuff). However, the trips to the drive-in probably stopped when I refused to lay down in the backseat during "Klute." I was nine or ten at the time...
