6. I think that they've grown since last week.
Don't give up, Ptah. Mine always take a good few weeks to really take root.

We're still a good 8 weeks away from even daring to plant. That makes your sunflowers very significant to me.

9. I love your ecosystem
I was out in Mesa last November (my daughters volleyball team was playing in Scottsdale). It was my very first time visiting the Southwest. I took a ride into the Superstition Mountains, and found it absolutely wondrous.

I would love to see it when all the desert flowers are in bloom.

10. Scottsdale is ok, if you want to see the desert, travel to Tucson,
see the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum

13. I wish my stay had been longer.
I spent one day doing all the art galleries and wandering around "Old Town" - Scottsdale, and one morning enjoying the bronze sculpture art project in downtown Mesa, and then my drive outside Mesa to the Superstition Mountains. I had to pee on a very windy mountain road, but you can't really hide behind a cactus, so I stopped at this simulated old mine museum.

If I get out there again I will most definitely get down to Tucson and up to the Grand Canyon. Most of the time I was in a gym.

11. Thread theft alert:
If you ever get the chance, drive through the West. The only thing cooler (figuratively speaking) than the Mojave and Below is the Great Basin.

I'd recommend, if you can get the chance, a road trip. All deserts are alike, by definition, but not all deserts are the same. A road trip north, starting in the Baja, moving into the Mojave, then the Painted, then back into the Mojave, and finally into the Great Basin -- crossing all of the various types of zones along the way -- before ultimately stopping in a place like Glacier National Park?

It will change your perspective on things.

23. Maybe that's impressive, if you're from Podunk, Iowa
Maybe that's impressive. If you're from Podunk, Iowa.

Big mountains, endless skies? Yawn.

It's the gradation that really impresses, IMO. The going from seemingly lifeless desert to the Great Basin to beyond. The same geography, with just 10 more inches of water a year.

For instance, I am really impressed by those pics, and wonder why anybody would ever voluntarily leave there? What's the COLA? Could I afford to move there? Do you work for the tourist bureau?

29. I think it is pretty much due north. Can't quite see it until you get past "The Thing"
(over the pass through Texas Canyon)

Going to be going by there tomorrow morning - hauling a kid up past Safford to Pima for a 3-day archeology job. I have never been to the top - both times I tried my vehicles overheated and we gave up ha ha.
