Holy feck! How do SUV drivers afford the gas?
I mean, I always knew it was expensive, but today I got my first taste of it. I rented an SUV because I have relatives in town, and we needed the room for a family outting (out of town--all will ride in one vehicle) tomorrow.

It cost me $60 to fill up the beast. SIXTY DOLLARS. I'm starting to wonder if that'll last the two days I have the vehicle, or if I'll have to put more gas in it.

I don't see how people who own these things can afford the gas. K-rist.

1. I don't know how people commute.
I use $30 gas every 2-3 weeks, and that make me cringe. How does everyone do it?

4. I commute about 90 miles each way, three times a week.
I use about $45 to $50/wk in gas. I know a LOT of people who do commute in SUVs, and they aren't making any more money than I am. I don't know how in the hell they do it. My car gets roughly 25-30 MPG. This SUV, I bet, will get about 15. I can't imagine putting $100 in the gas tank every week.

Just blows my mind.

5. Mine, too.
I have yet to come across the big-ass trucks...I see duallies all the time. (Like the bitch who tried to run over me at the Pizza Hut drive through. :grr: ) But not those that are becoming popular...

And I see those wretched Hummers everywhere. People buy them for their TEENAGERS. They must be paying out the ass for insurance and gas. I can't even imagine.

7. Ugh...Hummers just symbolize wretched excess for me.
I usually don't cast aspersions on big trucks, especially if they're dirty. I figure the driver needs it for something. But Hummers are just another story for me. Just a visceral reaction...

8. Shitboxes on cheap chassis.
I hate them.

Yeah, I don't begrudge anyone for driving a truck. I drive one half the time--but not for a daily vehicle.

I gotta say, this SUV I rented (Dodge something-or-other) is SWEET inside and out. But JESUS who can afford it...I guess I'll keep driving my tired little car and putting money in MMjr's college fund--I don't see how you can save a penny when you drive something that expensive.

13. I know!
I'm under no contract in the summer. I was asked to teach a class this summer...I said N-O.

I would have put everything I made into the gas tank, driving back and forth every day. Seriously, I would have cleared NOTHING, and that's with my car that gets decent mileage.

If I were teaching two or three classes, I would consider it, but not for what was offered to me to teach on class as an adjunct. Nope.

I did my part for gas conservation the other day: 4 full grown friends and I along w/ a mini dachshund squeezed into my Corolla for a daytrip to a nearby town for a birthday party. The folks in the back were big, tall people and were squeezed in like sardines but we made it!

Nothing like a fresh paint job on a vehicle. We had to get our 94 Ram repainted after an accident...it looks so nice with the paint. It's got 265,000 miles on it. (It's a gas guzzler, though--I only use it for haulin' stuff around or going to the lake).

G'night, tw. :hi:

You can actually get a lil better mileage on the Prius if you drive slower, etc but I'am happy with the average I'm getting. It only holds 10 gallons also so filling up is not so expensive. But the prius is actually a really nice car, very roomy, is a smooth ride and its quick lil car. I named my car Zippy.

33. They are great cars.
If I had the money to spare I would buy one and have two cars.

We drove to Dallas and back in my friend's Prius, used very little gas.

The backseat has lots of space, and the ride was smooth.

It was fun watching the dashboard.

We had no trouble passing other cars, lots of speed.

I would love to have one.

40. My uncle does all of that...
but, really, what's the difference in an $80 fill-up and an $82 fill-up?

And, even with limited driving, they cost a lot more to operate than sensible vehicles. I'd rather have a vehicle that I can jump in and go whereever I want without having to worry about the gas needle and pump price. That's like enslavement to a vehicle, which is ridiculous. "I want to own a big-ass vehicle so that I can limit the things I enjoy doing." The vehicle becomes a ball and chain.

My uncle has an Expedition. He said that he gets 12 MPG around town, and 17 highway. He's obsessive about oil changes and maintenance--seriously, this guy checks his on utility meters and keeps a log so that he doesn't get cheated by the meter readers. That's how anal he is.

I just don't see how, when presented with the choice, people can choose a vehicle that is restrictive to them. Give me a car with good gas mileage so that I can go where I want without having to fret about the cost of gas.

45. Conspicuous consumption.
The fewer other people who can afford it, the more fun it is.

Then again, many SUV owners may be trapped. Unable to afford a new, more efficient vehicle, they might struggle to fill the beast for as long as possible.
