Woman Killed By Falling Piano – Police Suspect Foul Play
Holly Grove – A local woman was killed early Saturday morning when she was struck by a falling piano. Mrs. Juanita K. Buncombe, 47, of Holly Grove died when a piano fell on her from the 7th floor of the Hoover Building located on Main Street. Subsequent investigation showed that Mrs. Buncombe had activated a cunningly concealed trip wire which caused the piano to plummet.

This is the twelfth death by piano in Kirkland County since June of last year. The most recent victim was Mr. Herman Edgerton of Dover who was killed by a falling piano there on February 29th. Despite the rash of deaths, police warned against jumping to conclusions.

“At this time, we don’t feel there’s a connection,” Chief Dennis Snodgrass announced at a news conference held late Saturday afternoon. “People tend to suspect that a serial killer is to blame whenever there’s a minor similarity in the crimes but we police are trained to make distinctions based on the evidence at hand. Though they may turn out to be the work of one person, we haven’t reached any firm conclusions as yet.”

When asked what citizens can do to protect themselves, he suggested they “look up a lot” and if they see a suspended piano, to avoid walking under it. “We don’t feel there will be many more of these crimes, he added. “There are only a few pianos left in the county.”

4. not the work of a serial killer?
It seems to me that 12 people dying by falling pianos in one county in less than a year is probably more than just a coincidence. It seems incredibly unlikely (and my bet, statistically improbable) that these deaths are just a random occurrence. At least that's my thought.
