In case you missed it - America's most important writer, Vonnegut, dead at 84
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/11/books/11cnd-vonnegut.html?_r=2&hp=&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&adxnnlx=1176347214-mANKS76Y1K7vZ8BY77edKw&oref=slogin

Like Mark Twain, Mr. Vonnegut used humor to tackle the basic questions of human existence: Why are we in this world? Is there a presiding figure to make sense of all this, a god who in the end, despite making people suffer, wishes them well?

He also shared with Twain a profound pessimism. “Mark Twain,” Mr. Vonnegut wrote in his 1991 book, “Fates Worse Than Death: An Autobiographical Collage,” “finally stopped laughing at his own agony and that of those around him. He denounced life on this planet as a crock. He died.”

5. Peace be with him
This is very sad news. He was one of the last giants in literature.

His gentle demeanor belied an extremely sharp intellect, a perfect balance of cynicism and compassion, and a keen observational wit, the likes of which is rare these days.

Farewell, Kurt Vonnegut. Thank you for your gifts.

35. I will disagree...
he's not one of the last of the giants of literature. He was one in a long series of giants.

For the rest of my life, and long after I'm dead, there will be giants. Vonnegut is just one in a long series.

That said, I actually shed tears over his death, and I've gone digging around for some of his books for me to enjoy again. I believe he was the finest living American writer, but he's not the end of the line.

47. I meant it as you said it
I didn't mean to imply "all time", just in my lifetime. There are dozens alive now, but only a handful had the impact on me Vonnegut did.

Watching Slaughterhouse Five at age 13 may have forever changed the course of my life.

Thank you, Mr. Vonnegut.

10. Thanks for including those quotes.
I guess I should be ashamed to admit I've never read one of his novels, but it's true, I haven't.

Mark Twain might be my favorite author and if Kurt Vonnegut is anything like him I know I have a lot of good reading ahead.

33. Well, I have a lot to look forward to,
and I am looking forward to reading him. I was familiar with his name and notoriety and was impressed with his stance on the "war". I fully intend to become familiar with at least one of his novels.

I'll start with Cat's Cradle and go from there. In fact I'm going to Amazon right now. I have the feeling I'm going to find a treasure.

36. Even his worst novels
are better than most things you'll read.

Cat's Cradle is my personal favorite, but the critics say Slaughterhouse-Five is better. I won't argue with them.

40. you will find many, many treasures
when it comes to Kurt Vonnegut...if you were impressed with his stance against the war you might first want to check out his landmark novel "The Slaughterhouse Five," and then his last published book from 2005, a collection of essays, thoughts, quips, etc. titled "A Man Without A Country."

you really can't go wrong with any Vonnegut. when i was very very young i consumed books like water but as i approached my teenage years i slowed down quite a bit. it wasn't until my older brother passed me his copy of "Breakfast of Champions" when i was 14 that my appetite and passion for the written word reignited (and it hasn't slowed down since).

Vonnegut himself, like Mark Twain before him, is an American treasure all by himself; probably my absolute favorite novelist.

enjoy

17. And the worst of it is that Cheney, Kinkade, Brittney, and American Idol still tick along
And that here was a man who was incredibly important, whose art is something that all good people of earth should have known well, but because it required reading at a level greater than fourth grade, American Idol gets all the news time.

It's a fucking crock.

Artists like Vonnegut should be the popular ones, and the shit like Idol, Brittney, Kinkade, pop music in general, so many novelists, and a lot of TV shows are the shit that should be seen only by a few truly culturally dead assholes.

But, sadly, the culturally dead asshole to culturally literate person ratio in this country is 100000 to 1.

It's not helping. I'm still saddened more than I can say.
