1. 1967 must have sucked
I guess they didn't feel that The Ohio Express doing Yummy Yummy Yummy was worthy of a Grammy.

15. Maybe a Monkees tune won...
then they found out that the Monkees weren't singing...

I liked Guitarzan, myself. But I guess Ray Stevens wasn't exactly new.

8. You should hear his version of
"Whole Lotta Love". Led Zeppelin pales compared to Bob's version.

3. So it appears that 1976 was the swing year of not giving the award to artists.
Yeah, there are a few artists who got it after 1976, but not many; and a few non-artists who got it prior to 1976, but not many.

Thanks for the list! I had been wondering when the turning point was of the awards not going to artists any more, but going to the biggest financial successes of the music industrial complex.

If I had to listen to "Sailing" one more time I would have gone postal.

That song was elevator music BEFORE it was elevator music.

21. That's such a shame.
I'd love to know what the competition was.

I'm reminded of this thing a radio station here does every year - for a weekend, they'll play the number two song of a given week's back-issue of Billboard, then they'll play the number one. It's always so fun, because the number two is always some unfuckwithable classic like the Beatles or something, and the number one will invariably be a novelty like "Dominique."

Saturday Night Fever was the best group vocal performance. I don't know why Boogie, Oogie, Ooogie didn't win!

I mean an award that's worth winning!

I guess I wouldn't have considered Shelby Lynne a "new artist" in 2001. I was playing her stuff on country radio in the early 90s. She must have met the criteria, though.
