Need rocommendations on Home Design software

I'm looking at a big home improvement project in the next couple of years and would like to experiment with design software before I talk to a contractor.

Has anybody used home design software? If so, what package did you use? My goal is to do a picture, take it to the contractor/designer and say: what can you do that looks kinda like this?

The free version so far seems impressive. I'm trying to layout a new kitchen in 3D.
