If you were to get a new pet...
Ok, here's the thing...We want to get a small pet, most likely, and I'm not sure what type. I'd love a dog, but we live in an apartment, so that's a no-go. I'm not a big cat fan, frankly. We're thinking ferret or rat. I've had both before and know how to care for them, so that's not an issue.

What do y'all think?

1. Get a Chihuahia. We have one in our small apartment.
They are small, dont eat or sh&t much. The short haired variety, like ours, is very low maintainence too. They are a lot of un to boot. Very entertaining and loving.

And she's a real sweetheart too.

2. See, the problem with that is...
We're out of the house all day fr. 6-5, and I can't feel good about leaving a dog home alone for that long. Otherwise, I'd totally be getting a pup. I'm a serious dog person.

28. Get a pair!
They'd be the best of friends, and wouldn't have to be lonely while you were away.

3. hedgehog

They're pretty independent but can be quite entertaining. If you get them young they will bond with you and will be calm when handled

13. PM your questions.
I owned them for many years, went to some shows and used to know a few breeders
Here's a good source http://hedgehogclub.com/care.html

4. Get a rabbit. Or better yet, a bonded pair that can amuse themselves while you're away.
They're social and loving, small enough for an apartment, and self-contained enough they can keep themselves occupied in a rabbit-proof space while you're at school/work.

And shelters and rescues have more of them than they know what to do with this time of year.

5. you should totally get a cornish rex, technically a cat, yet but no shedding and very puppy-
monkey- ferretish, especially if you get a runty one like my Sweet Pea.
they are very smart and very affectionate, so they'd fit right in your happy home.

6. bird bird bird bird bird
Unless it's going to be left alone for long stretches of time (because they're extremely social animals), you can't go wrong with anything in the parrot family--just make sure you get one that's been handfed (and is therefore tame).

They're freakishly smart, funny and affectionate.

16. We have a 15-year old, Double Yellow-naped Amazon. He was hand raised
and he has a wonderful disposition. He was in the car with us for 7 hours today and was very well-behaved. He eats whatever we are eating and our vet tells us that he is one of the happiest, healthiest birds that he has seen. He talks to keep himself company and generally doesn't require our full attention as some of them do. He does like to shred his cage liner so we have to keep up after him a bit but he is generally a sweet, loving bird. I have no problem recommending a parrot, as long as they have been raised by someone who knows what they are doing.

12. Get a Chinchilla.

This is my boy Narmer. I know several people that want to get one after meeting him.

Here's my brother's girl Chi Bon. I've always like them but she made me fall in love with chins and want one of my own.

14. A hand raised, female, grey cockatiel.
Quite, easy to care for, calm, affectionate, loves to hang out with her person, doesn't mind being alone during the day as long as she has something to do - watch the neighborhood, play with toys, listen to the radio. They're about twice the size of a parakeet, so they don't need a huge cage. With good care, they have 10-15 year life span.

(I've had both - although no rats currently)

Lower maintenance. Need at least 2, no rats housed alone, please. :)

I miss the rat girls.

19. We have a chihuahua/pug mix and one cat
in a small 800 square feet duplex. Tommy the cat is slightly bigger than Leo and they play together. Leo is 1/4 pug and that makes him a little bit sturdier than the average chihuahua. However, he looks more like a chi than a pug...just a little bit tougher

A small dog might work for you.

21. I once had a leash trained gerbil.
Edited on Fri Apr-13-07 10:50 PM by Jamastiene
He would ask for walks and I would take him all through the house on walks. I even took him outside on his leash once, but was too afraid something would come along and get him. He also used to love running around in his exercise ball. Here is a nice picture of him posing for the camera while he was eating his treats.

He always posed for pictures. I wrote his entire name on the Polaroid a long time ago.

29. You may not be a cat fan now...
but they might surprise you. We had cats the entire time I was growing up, and while I like dogs, I love cats. Low maintenance, no need to take them for walks, and if you handle them a lot as kittens they can be very loving and sweet. My parents' cats like to hang out in whatever room you're in, they like being around people so much.

Best of luck whatever you choose. :)
